It’s been rumored that rappers GoldLink and Isaiah Rashad have been cooking up something in the studio, and today those hopeful suspicions are held true as GoldLink shared their new collaborative record, ‘Untitled’, on his Soundcloud hours ago. Produced by The Antydote with vocals from Preston Harris, ‘Untitled’ is the unexpected collaboration you didn’t know you needed.

Two of the top emerging rappers right now, Rashad and GoldLink make for a great team on the new track, so let’s hope that this is just one of many records that the two recorded together.

Chicago is bar none one of the best cities for live music, not only in the U.S. but in the world. Whether you are seeing an intimate performance at the Concord Music Hall, a packed show at some of the city’s most historic venues like the Chicago Theatre or the Aragon Ballroom, one of the cities awesome music festivals, or even a huge production at the United Center, Chicago has something for everyone.

And right now, even in the middle of winter, it’s a great time to catch a show in the Windy City. This month alone fans can check out some performances by rapper GoldLink, R&B’s super emerging artist Bryson Tiller, the talented Carly Rae Jepsen, American soul singer Leon Bridges and many more.

Bryson Tiller @ House of Blues (3/4)

In just a few days Bryson Tiller is bring his T R A P S O U L Tour to Chicago’s House of Blues. With a scheduled opening performance from They., which will surely set the tone for the rest of the night, there is not a better place to be this Friday than Chicago’s Marina City. Unfortunately if you haven’t got your tickets yet, you may be out of luck, as tickets are all sold-out. But for those lucky enough to get tickets on time, you are surely on track to start off this upcoming weekend on a high note.

Carly Rae Jepsen @ The Metro (3/12)

Don’t necessarily expect her to perform her Full House theme cover that picked up a lot of buzz on the internet, but you can certainly expect Carly Rae Jepsen to put on a great show at The Metro in Chicago next week. The ‘Call Me Maybe’ singer and Canada native put out one of the best albums last year, with her latest LP Emotion, and if her live shows are half as good as her new album, then fans will definitely get their money’s worth March 12th. Tickets for this one are all sold-out, so if you missed out, definitely be sure to get your tickets on time when Carly Rae comes back to the Windy City.

GoldLink @ The Chop Shop & 1st Ward (3/9)

GoldLink is easily one of the most exciting rappers to watch in 2016. Last year he introduced himself to many, while opening for Mac Miller on his GO:OD AM Tour. So after picking up a bunch of new fans in 2015, 2016 is definitely the year of GoldLink. He has a huge co-sign from Rick Rubin, his lyrics are more than impressive, and anyone who has seen him live will tell you that he puts on a great show. Tickets for this one are a steal, only $16, so get them now before they are all gone.

Fall Out Boy @ The United Center (3/12)

Fall Out Boy is expected to put on one hell of show next week at the United Center. Accompanied by AWOLNATION and Pvris, expect Pete Wentz and company to blow the roof off at the house that Michael Jordan built. Chicago definitely shows love for Fall Out Boy so tickets have been gone for quite some time, but if you’re one of the many thousands to be in attendance next week, be prepared to have a night that you won’t soon forget.

Leon Bridges @ The Chicago Theatre (3/11)

Leon Bridges had an amazing 2015 and it seems like he has been on tour ever since we first heard his name. His debut album Coming Home was by far one of the best projects of last year, it landed Bridges his first (of many to come) Grammy nomination, his live performances are critically acclaimed, and you can see all the above for yourself at the history Chicago Theatre on March 11th. Tickets for this one as well, have long been sold out, so if you already have your tickets, get ready for a great show.

Charlie Puth & Phoebe Ryan @ Park West (3/22)

Charlie Puth probably had the best year imaginable in 2015. His Wiz Khalifa-assisted smash hit ‘See You Again’ was one of the biggest, if not the biggest, song of 2015, and most importantly it introduced Charlie Puth to the world and showcased his amazing song-writing skills. His new single ‘One Call Away’ is getting a lot of traction on pop radio, and you can see the talented singer-songwriter perform at Lincoln Park’s Park West on March 22nd with the equally talented Phoebe Ryan. Expect Puth to perform a number of tracks from his 2016 debut album, Nine Track Mind, and Ryan to perform a number of her fan favorites, including her new single ‘Chronic’. Tickets are all sold out, so if you didn’t get yours in time, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep a close eye on Puth, as he is easily one of the most exciting pop artists to watch this year.

Hermitude @ The Chop Shop & 1st Ward (3/10)

Following their sold-out headlining tour last fall, Australian hip-hop duo Hermitude are returning to the Windy City for a headlining show at The Chop Shop & 1st Ward. On March 10th fans are sure to hear a number of cuts from the duo’s latest LP, Dark Night Sweet Light, which was well received by many. The album featured the likes of Big K.R.I.T., Chuck Inglish, Estelle, Pell and more. And even if you can’t make it to the Chop Shop this month, be sure to make the trip down to Manchester, TN to see the guys perform at Bonnaroo this year! Get your tickets for Hermitude’s forthcoming Chicago show before they are all sold out, here.

The Top 30 Albums of 2015

The Top 30 Albums of 2015

Following an arguably weak year for albums, 2015 has seen a lot of great projects and many unexpected ones as well. While this year we saw the highly anticipated return of Adele, patient fans are still awaiting Frank Ocean’s sophomore album and Kanye West’s Swish. But where Frank and Kanye have left music fans hanging, new comers like Bryson Tiller, Alessia Cara, GoldLink, BOOTS, Halsey and more have put out some great albums to help kick off their relatively young careers. 2015 though was also a great year for some heavyweights, of course we’re referring to artists like Drake, Future, Kendrick Lamar and even pop superstars like One Direction and Justin Bieber. In just one day, November 13th, the music world saw more great releases than it did in a span of months in 2014. Cheers to hoping 2016 delivers as well as 2015 did!

The 20 Best Concert Tours of 2015

Best Tours

2015 saw a lot of great concert tours, from J. Cole’s Forest Hills Drive Tour with Big Sean, YG and Jeremih to Taylor Swift’s huge 1989 World Tour. Some tours sold out stadiums and arenas, selling out the entire tour before it even begun, and some tours were in small intimate venues, either strategically or because simple supply and demand. Some had stacked lineups top to bottom and some introduced us to a lot of great new artists. Festivals like Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Coachella were bigger than ever this year, but that didn’t stop your favorite artists from building up some great shows of their own.

Album Review: And After That, We Didn’t Talk | GoldLink

BY VIKASH DASS

In 2015, a large chunk of the most potent music curation and quality artistic output can be credited to the guys over at the Soulection camp—a collective of DJ’s, artists, and creatives alike that thrive on putting forth both compelling and infectious tracks for the listener embodied in whole original projects or re-interpretations of today’s favourites and yesterday’s classic’s alike. There is a strong chance that they’ve infected your Soundcloud rotation one way or another, and if they aren’t making you dance there, they’re doing it on their own Beats 1 Radio show on Apple Music or they’re in your city moving venues and clubs with their eclectic taste and aptitude for all things lit.

If there is a single artist affiliated with the constantly growing brand of Soulection that embodies them best, it’s 21-year old rapper GoldLink. Last year’s The God Complex made waves as his entry into the world of a cohesive project, and it didn’t disappoint. The DMV native earned himself mass amounts of critical acclaim, a growth spurt in his fans and followers, and a XXL Freshman Class look for 2015 all off the strength of one mixtape. That offering might seem minimal, but that tape offered enough flash and brilliance to warrant all of what he’s received. It’s sound was radiant and bouncy with tempos climbing track by track, as 808s slap and sit below warping house synths, all reinterpreted and redistributed in dozens of ways. Within that tape, we got peeks into GoldLink’s hyperactive mind and capabilities as a writer, getting personal on tracks but never too dark to piss on his dance-y parade. With his latest offering and his debut album through Soulection, And After That, We Didn’t Talk, GoldLink trades his schizophrenic thoughts in for a more studied outlook on the embers of a love lost, a linear narrative that flows through eleven tracks of romance, anguish, and excellence.

Still, And After That offers GoldLink’s signature blend of hip-hop and ethereal spawns of house music, but one of the most noticeable additions is his use of melody within these records. His ability to effortlessly transition in and out of a raw, moving pocket and pivot right back to rapping fluently with his unmistakable voice and flow results in most tracks here sounding like records—wholesomely crafted sonic moments from top to bottom that are able to tell powerful stories with conviction, and still be something to dance to. ‘Dance on Me’ is a perfect example of GoldLink’s ability to bob and weave between his own interpretation of R&B and straight spitting over the same groove. There’s something incredibly satisfying to the ear and just outright impressive about GoldLink’s eclecticism within his writing and song structure as he floats between several different genres while never impeding the album’s core concept and narrative. ‘Dark Skin Women’ is a spirited, funky twist that rings off early in the record, adding a dose of energy before the record mutates into a completely different vibe.

‘Late Night’ kicks off the second half of the record with assistance from Masego’s sugar sweet melodies with a hook that’s guaranteed to seep into your skull and have you singing it back for hours. GoldLink plays off Masego’s contributions to push the plot forward a bit with the woman in question. The relationship at hand begins to wither based off writing clues from Goldlink himself, but as the album plays on, and GoldLink utilizes his collaborators on this latter end of the album for added perspectives and textures on the story and the music. ‘Polarized’ with Demo Taped is a gliding, jazzy piece while budding talent Anderson .Paak plays guest on ‘Unique’ for a colourful cut that expounds on rare breeds of love. (“Is that your ass i’m holding?” could very well be my favourite line on this album.) Thematically, the interesting thing is GoldLink is never really telling you what’s happening, but he’s telling you how he feels about it. By virtue of his emotional compass, as you come the end of the record, you might not know what happened or how it happened, but you’ll know what it did to him.

The record ends with ‘See I Miss’, where the subject of the record seems the most distant. GoldLink uses the chorus to question, “Who knew, yeah/That I would even miss that bitch” over a soothing, jazz drum pattern and filtered keys creating a sonic environment not too distant from the sounds achieved on D’Angelo’s last album. The production on this album in it’s totality is absolutely stunning, as every producer involved really came with their best. Galimatias, Medasin, and Tom Misch are all credited with pitching into the album’s sounds, but Louie Lastic’s placements here end up resonating the most. Album single ‘Spectrum’ has an unreal groove sporting a Missy Elliott-sample paired with random barrages of Tagalog-dialogue, and is one of the only tracks where GoldLink is rapping all the way through with a non-stop flow straight out the toolbox of André 3000. With a knock like that, you can’t really blame him.

This is an album that is masterfully crafted from top to bottom, and is bravely experimental without deviating too far left from what we loved to hear from GoldLink in the first place. The most intriguing aspect of the record, though, is probably how he left it, as the last word you hear on the album is atop a familiar static-filled filter from the intro ‘After You Left’ and is simply “repeat”—as the first sound on the intro being that same static-filled filter beneath what sounds like a car-crash. It could be GoldLink’s way of conveying that he has not learned from these experiences, or maybe it’s a testament to the monotony of the headspace that existed through the album’s duration. Either way, you’re left to fetch whatever few details GoldLink’s dropped within one of the best records to release this year to try and piece together any tangible events of the story presented. It almost makes the unspoken just as important as the music itself, which is a fitting quality for a story that ultimately ends with, We Didn’t Talk.
