Last night singer Alessia Cara performed for a sold-out crowd at The Metro in Chicago. Despite canceling her tour performance the night below, as well as a couple radio appearances earlier in the day, Alessia fought off the loss of her voice and was able to still give a memorable performance. Still hitting all the notes that the ‘Here’ singer hits throughout her recordings, you could hardly tell that Cara lost her voice less than 24-hours before.

Opening the night for the Windy City crowd was rapper Leaf. One of the most entertaining female rapper/singers out there, Leaf kept the crowd entertained and definitely set the mood for the rest of the night. The new emerging queen of New York, Leaf is certainly an artist to watch in 2016.

Next up was singer Craig Stickland, a member of Alessia’s band but a man with a sound of his own. With his guitar in hand, and the screams of the crowd guiding him on, the highlight of Stickland’s set came when the sold-out crowdspontaneously brought out their cell phone lights to set the mood for one of Stickland’s slower records, a first on this tour Stickland told the crowd.

Alessia Cara

Following Stickland and Leaf was singer Kevin Garrett, a critical favorite when it comes to emerging artists in the new year. An indie pop musician out of Pittsburg, PA, Garrett performed a few tracks from his acclaimed 2015 EP, Mellow Drama, which was released in April of last year. Garrett’s electronic sounds and soothing vocals foreshadow Garrett’s eventual takeover of his share of the indie pop world.

After three great opening performances, the crowd could not wait for Alessia’s headlining set. You could tell that the standing room crowd was at the edge of their seat, so to speak of course, anxious about Alessia’s appearance for the night. The crowd was well aware that Cara was forced to cancel the night before, so when she finally hit the stage, Chicago felt more than lucky. And throughout the show, you could not have guessed that Cara’s beautiful voice wasn’t at it’s absolute best. Even at 90%, 95%, wherever she was last night, Cara’s vocals carried through The Metro like no other artist could. Throughout the night she performed some of her best records, off her 2014 Four Pink Walls EP and her debut album, Know-It-All, where the North American tour gets its name. Highlights of her set included her softer ballads, her energetic performance of ‘Seventeen’, and of course her performance of her #1 hit single, ‘Here’.

Today iHeartMedia announced the return of its huge iHeartRadio music festival in Las Vegas. Taking place this year on September 23rd and 24th, also returning with the festival will be its Daytime Village and Macy’s “iHeartRadio Rising Star” talent search. And while the full lineup for the mega festival will release at some point in the future, iHeartRadio is giving us a sneak peak at the lineup with the announcement of its first two performers, two of the biggest emerging acts in music, Alessia Cara and country music’s Sam Hunt who will perform at the festival’s Daytime Village portion.

Last year’s lineup was epic, with featured performers like Kanye West, Coldplay, Sam Smith, Demi Lovato, Puff Daddy, The Weeknd, Lil Wayne, Fall Out Boy, Disclosure, Hozier, Jason Derulo, Diplo, Trey Songz, Nick Jonas, Jennifer Lopez, The Killers and many more, so if 2016’s lineup is even half as great, it will definitely be a night to remember.

The Top 30 Albums of 2015

Following an arguably weak year for albums, 2015 has seen a lot of great projects and many unexpected ones as well. While this year we saw the highly anticipated return of Adele, patient fans are still awaiting Frank Ocean’s sophomore album and Kanye West’s Swish. But where Frank and Kanye have left music fans hanging, new comers like Bryson Tiller, Alessia Cara, GoldLink, BOOTS, Halsey and more have put out some great albums to help kick off their relatively young careers. 2015 though was also a great year for some heavyweights, of course we’re referring to artists like Drake, Future, Kendrick Lamar and even pop superstars like One Direction and Justin Bieber. In just one day, November 13th, the music world saw more great releases than it did in a span of months in 2014. Cheers to hoping 2016 delivers as well as 2015 did!

Alessia Cara Announces 2016 North American Tour with Kevin Garrett

BY TER STAFF

Singer Alessia Cara is our favorite emerging artist right now, and our next favorite is not even close. Earlier this year we interviewed the Canada native, and in only a few month’s time her single ‘Here’ has sky rocketed up the charts and she released her debut project Four Pink Walls and her debut album Know-It-Alltwo of our favorite projects of 2015. An LP and EP later, fans could not wait for their first chance to see Alessia on her own tour and now they finally have the chance as Alessia will be kicking off a North American headlining tour in 2016.

Supported by the talented Kevin Garrett for the tour’s U.S. dates, Alessia will be kicking off her tour in her Montreal on January 15th, will hit a number of stops throughout the United States, and then ends her tour back in Canada on April 1st. Pre-sale for the tour begins this Wednesday (11/18) and you can check out Alessia’s website for more info!

Album Review: Know-It-All | Alessia Cara

BY VIKASH DASS

Among the many exceptional voices 2015 has introduced us to, Alessia Cara’s ranks pretty high on that list. We’re not playing favourites, but the 19-year old Canadian vocalist hasn’t given us much of a choice, as she’s owned the year after her inaugural single ‘Here’ impetuously exploded and continues to run laps around radio internationally. She has leaped from being the jewel in your YouTube subscription feed to not only being a household name, but a bona-fide pop powerhouse, and with her debut album Know-It-All, Alessia has validated her own artistry once again. Not only is Alessia Cara responsible for one of the most compelling singles of the year, she’s managed to release one of the most dynamic pop albums 2015 has seen, too.

The talented Alessia Cara put out one of our favorite projects this year, with her debut EP Four Pink Walls (check out our review here). Every since introducing the ‘Here’ singer to our readers, when we interviewed Alessia earlier this year, we can’t stop following her story and her new music. And well before anyone could have ever anticipated, Cara’s debut album, Know-It-All, is less than a couple weeks away (available for purchase on November 13th). But if for some reason, you are especially impatient, you don’t have to wait a minute longer, as Alessia has treated fans by allowing them to stream her full length LP in its entirety on NPR’s “First Listen”.

New Music: Alessia Cara – “Wild Things”

BY TER STAFF

alessiacara

Just a few months ago we interviewed the young and talented, Alessia Cara. Among many things we talked about her then forthcoming EP, Four Pink Walls (check out our review here). While we were instantly excited for her debut project, we couldn’t have guessed that the ‘Here’ singer’s debut album would already come this year. Titled, Know-It-All, Alessia will be competing with the likes of One Direction and Justin Bieber with a November 13th release for her debut album. Don’t expect her to compete in terms of sales, but you shouldn’t be surprised if the singer’s debut is the best project to drop that Friday.

In anticipation of her big release, Alessia has shared the album’s new single, ‘Wild Things’. A record she has performed live a number of times on her press circuit for Four Pink Walls, ‘Wild Things’ is another great record from the Canadian singer , in addition to the five tracks she shared to fans with her EP.

Stream ‘Wild Things’ below and pre-order Know-It-All now!

EP Review: Four Pink Walls | Alessia Cara

Ego Death
BY VIKASH DASS

Not too long ago, liking pop music was lame. I can recall various moments from my childhood where I was anguished and fussing with dials in the car, shooting off statements denouncing pop music and it’s relationship with radio targeting it’s saturated, uninspired nature. Radio represented the popular opinion, and was an algorithmic machine that responded to and replayed the music that would have the highest chance of people keeping that station on—an attribute that makes terrestrial radio a constant target for criticism. Although the analytics of radio haven’t really changed, artists like 19-year old Alessia Cara, who we had the pleasure of speaking with last month, are pushing the quality of the content forward, making sure that radio in 2015 is the most diverse and the most inspiring it’s ever been. A simple glance at the top charts on iTunes will prove to you that popular music is not what is was, and chances are you’ll see songs like Alessia Cara’s ‘Here’, her inaugural single for Def Jam.

‘Here’ represents every ounce of merit in my words above. It’s a song that deviates from any pop-precedents, whether you choose to focus on the strange sample, the rant-y, avant garde flow, or the lyrics about ironically being stranded in a mob. ‘Here’ is an anti-party anthem that boosts the ideals of the introvert, as Alessia picks apart her unfortunate experience at your average party. The party itself isn’t exactly the problem, as there’s nothing really out of the ordinary being depicted—it’s just that Alessia’s own personal definition of bliss is not in an intoxicated haze, but rather in the confines of her own room, or around people she actually knows, doing things she actually likes.

Her debut EP Four Pink Walls reflects this isolation and reclusiveness, as the title itself is a tribute to her bedroom walls growing up where she would indolently aspire to be the things the she is now. The song ‘Four Pink Walls’ elaborates further, with lines like “I assumed there was only room for my dreams in my dreams so I’d sleep and repeat ’til the moon went home”,  before diving into the booming chorus, “Then the universe aligned, with what I had in mind, who knew there was a life behind those four pink walls” proving and manifesting that Alessia’s place of mental refuge also happened to be the place her talent and stardom was honed and perfected. Reflection and retrospect are integral components of this project, as Alessia often employs the benefits of hindsight to boast added wisdom on the topics at hand. ‘Seventeen’ sonically hits like a pop-anthem reminiscent of recent Taylor Swift joints, but it lyrically nods to the advice our parents give us in our teenage years—advice we’d later look at and understand from a more developed perspective. It’s hard to believe Alessia Cara didn’t write original music prior to her material released through Def Jam, as through solely leaning on her own experiences and collaborative guidance from decorated writer Sebastian Kole she has already developed  poignant, original, and opinionated perspectives within her music.

Standout song ‘Outlaws’ flaunts Alessia’s pen in the most impressive ways, as she exhibits the ability to not only say something with her music, but to tell you something. She simultaneously bobs and weaves through chords with a sweet, tender melody while also slowly unfolding a bubbly and emotive infatuation with a love interest. The metaphors and practically visual sense of storytelling will remind you of writers like Frank Ocean or Ed Sheeran. ‘I’m Yours’ is similarly vivid and robust in imagery, but it’s a little less spirited and a little more fragile. Alessia shrivels into a vulnerable subject of someone else’s impeding love, as she feels helpless in succumbing to these imminent, foreign emotions.

The song structure here is far from experimental and nothing to marvel at, but the tracks given to us on this EP impose their profoundness on the stories being told. With Four Pink Walls, Alessia Cara is able to flawlessly carve her own stories into a familiar lane and keep us invested. With the other pop-princesses coexisting with Alessia putting out records about substance-induced elation, Four Pink Walls offers the story of the teenage wallflower finding solace in solitude. Although this five-track project is meant to be a prelude to Alessia’s giant album coming this Fall, she’s already made us feel like we know her well, and she’s already changed the climate of pop music in 2015—for the better.
