Concert Review: Halsey Opens for Imagine Dragons, Talks Chicago

Halsey

Original to herself and her craft, Halsey is a 20-year-old on the rise. Hailing from Brooklyn, Halsey’s list of accomplishments are already piling high, and continuing her success, Halsey was invited to join Imagine Dragons for their North American “Smoke + Mirrors” tour. This tour is a big jump for the singer, who is about to release her debut studio album Badlands later this summer, as Halsey has gone from nightclub and small venue performances to now performing for packed arenas.

For her Chicago set last night, Halsey performed many songs from her recent release EP, Room 93, while she also featured songs from her upcoming album. Halsey’s performance was greeted with a large crowd in attendance just for her. Her gripping voice was accompanied with her suggestive powerful lyrics. We spoke to Halsey after her performance, to see if she enjoyed the Chicago crowd as much as the Windy City enjoyed her set.

“Chicago is my favorite city to perform in,” Halsey told us. “The crowd is highly respectful, I don’t know if it comes from being in a place that’s so heavy populated and full of divert. The kids here are less entitled, they want to come and hear the music, there not here to grab a fucking selfie. They just really embrace what I’m here to do that’s why I love returning hear. I think it’s an incredible mentality for music lovers to have.”

Halsey also had nothing but great things to say about her fans. “The fans are pretty intense and authentic and I love each and every single one of them to death. Something we struggle with me being a musician rather than a personality because a lot of kids relate to me and that’s a beautiful thing but at the end of the day I’m an artist and I’m here to perform.” And if you didn’t get to catch her performance last night, don’t worry because you will definitely have another chance real soon (find a tour date near you at Halsey’s website). “My fans are incredible, they sold out my headline tour for me. I’m so excited to get back on the road and go see them across the in U.S. in a couple of months in a tour for the album. It’s going to be amazing, nothing is better than playing a headline show because every single person is there for the exact same reason, which is you.” And while it isn’t a headlining set, we can only imagine that Halsey is excited to return in just a couple months for Lollapalooza.

Metric

Canadian indie rock band Metric opened up for Imagine Dragons. Enthusiastic lead vocals from Emily Hanies provided the energy to the crowd for their performance. Hanies’ free spirited and relaxed demeanor provided for a spirited feel, as the band brought the crowd to a new wave celebration. On tour to help support their upcoming sixth studio album release Pagans in Vegas (which is set to debut in late September), Metric provided Chicago fans a look inside what’s to come.

Imagine Dragons

From the start Imagine Dragons created a nonstop thrill ride that had everyone out of their seats. The live performance could have been measured by the sheer intense atmosphere created. Not often does a live performance live up to the studio quality that were used to, but Imagine Dragons surpasses that expectation by giving a chill defining live performance. The band performed all their top songs, with a set list that included: Deamons, Forever Young, Bet my Life, of course Radioactive, and many more. With Radioactive closing the show, the thousands of fans that filled in the Allstate Arena during a massive thunderstorm together, for a rock anthem sing-along.

To close the night, lead singer Dan Reynolds finished the show by thanking everyone for attending when they instead could have been watching the Chicago Blackhawks play the Tampa Bay Lightning for the Stanley Cup. He also announced when the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup as he put on a Blackhawks cap.

Go Imagine Dragons, Go Halsey and Metric, and Go Hawks!

UNCUT | Snoop Dogg Is The Most Intolerant Person In Rap

Can someone tell me why an artist like Kanye West is hated by the majority of America for not having false modesty (or cocky as some people would rather word it) but Snoop Dogg gets a pass for being the biggest sexist and homophobic person in rap? Not only is Snoop Dogg not generally hated by the public but you never hear of Snoop Dogg losing sponsorships or facing other consequences for the things he does and says.

Tonight, rapper Big K.R.I.T. paid a visit to young Chicago artists as part of Donda House‘s “Behind The Mic” series. With a surprise visit from Chicago’s own, Lupe Fiasco, K.R.I.T. gave some great advice to the up and coming performers. K.R.I.T. will also stick around the Windy City tomorrow, as he headlines Donda House’s spring graduation. Donda’s House is a non-profit organization that honors the educational legacy of Kanye West’s late mother, Dr. Donda West. The organization holds a number of great programs and opportunities for Chicago’s youth, providing a safe and creative environment for Chicago’s aspiring artists.

Donda House’s “Behind the Mic” series is one of our favorite community programs by the non-profit, which has invited Big Sean, No-ID and more to give unique and valuable advice to the community’s brightest. Along with their community showcase at the Common Ground Foundation’s “AAHH! Fest”, Chicago artists have the opportunity to continue the city’s legacy of being one of the world’s best music hubs.

Chance The Rapper shared the release of his new album Surf (with The Social Experiment) last night, but that didn’t stop him from giving back to his community less than a day later. Today Chance paid a visit to students and faculty at Chicago’s John Fiske School and Scammon Elementary School to present awards for the “Get Schooled, Get Connected” challenge. The challenge, designed to help Chicago Public School (CPS) students stay motivated to finish the school year strong, ended last Friday and Chance did his part to help reward the students’ hard work.

Forget about ghosts, demons, spiders and your grandma’s feet; there is something else to be afraid of now. That something is the “Based God’s Curse”. The curse is said to have originated deep within the Amazon Forest and was used by native tribes to…okay not really. It is a curse placed by Lil B (“The Based God”), and it is meant to ruin that person’s fortune, success and in extreme cases, even causing foot fractures.

Last night G.O.O.D. Music’s Big Sean brought his 2015 tour to The Rave in Milwaukee, WI. Performing a number of tracks off his latest Dark Sky Paradise album (check out our review here) as well as a catalog of his best hits and verses, Big Sean instantly got the crowd hyped as he opened to his extended version of his ‘Paradise’ record.

“Was up in Florida, no Marlins, n*gga. I’m that Shawn, no Marlon, n*gga.”

And with an energetic opening performance from ‘Backflip’ rapper Casey Veggies, who will see the release of his debut album later this year, and a surprise performance by Chicago’s King Louie (and even an appearance by 1/2 of the production duo, Da Internz), Milwaukee fans definitely got their money’s worth last night.

Photos: Kanye West Receives His Honorary Doctorate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago

Earlier today, Kanye West received his honorary doctorate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Honored for his vast contributions to the arts, through both his musical accolades and his role and influence in fashion, The College Dropout spoke to his fellow SAIC graduating class for his Graduation day. While Kanye dropped out of Chicago State University (just 13 miles south of today’s ceremony) over a decade ago, as he felt that a college education wasn’t the best ticket for his success in the music industry, his late mother, Dr. Donda West (who was a professor at Chicago State University) would have been more than proud to see her son finally walk for his graduation.

Check out our photos below, as we sent our photographer Dan Garcia to capture some of the ceremony’s best moments.

I Witnessed The College Dropout’s Graduation

BY DAN GARCIA

Kanye West Graduation
Photo by Dan Garcia/The Early Registration

It’s graduation day. Finally his big day is here. I’ve seen him work his ass off for over a decade and today everything that he is done is being recognized by way of a doctoral degree. Years ago, he promised his mother (an educator who earned her doctorate decades ago) that he was going back to school. While she left this world far too soon, she is certainly looking down to watch her son, a college dropout, finally receive his degree. To be there in person and to share such a special moment was an honor. I could not be any more proud.

Now you would probably assume I know this college dropout personally. Instead the college dropout I am talking about isn’t just any college dropout, he is “THE College Dropout,” Mr. Kanye West. It was a weird feeling. In many ways I felt a sense of pride for Kanye. I felt like I was at a graduation for a family member. While I do not know Kanye personally, it seems like I have been with him since the moment he dropped out of college until today, when he received his honorary doctorate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Music will do that to you, as long as you love it that much. People will spend every ounce of energy they have to defend an artist’s every questionable move. Fans will put up their last penny to get tickets for an artist’s summer tour. When your favorite singer wins their first Grammy, you feel like you won your first Grammy. Music turns a relationship you have with someone you have never met into a close personal relationship.

Luckily pride is not exclusive to personal relationships. Given the amount of detail that Kanye West has shared with his fans throughout his career, from the death of his mother to his darkest moments and heartbreaks, a Kanye fan can easily imagine what Kanye was feeling today. His graduation day was a day removed from Mother’s Day, Kanye West would not only receive a great honor for his contributions to the arts (whether it be music or fashion) but he would also share a degree with his mother, the late Dr. Donda West, which she earned over three decades ago. As expected from a college professor, Dr. West originally disapproved of Kanye’s dropout from college, believing that a college education was the only ticket to your goals. While she eventually came to accept and understand Kanye’s decision (and later managed Kanye’s career), you can only imagine how proud she would be to see her son on his graduation day.

This is why I had to find a way into the graduation ceremony to watch Kanye receive his honorary degree. Personally I have been a big Kanye fan since his 2004 debut with The College Dropout, so to witness a big moment of his career in person was my only option. While at times I contemplated finding and buying a ticket from a SAIC graduation student, The Early Registration was fortunate enough to receive an invitation to the ceremony to see Kanye receive his honorary doctorate in person. Before I knew it, it was just seconds before The College Dropout’s Graduation.

“I guess this is my dissertation. Homie, this shit is basic. Welcome to Graduation.” – Kanye West (‘Good Morning’)

For today’s dissertation, Kanye opened by labeling himself as a pop artist. “I’m a pop artist, so my medium is public opinion, and the world is my canvas. ‘I’m sorry’ is something you can use a lot, it gives you the opportunity to give your opinion, apologize for it, and give your opinion again,” said Kanye. While Kanye can come off as cocky and arrogant to many, Kanye humbled himself by admitting that today made him feel nerves that he isn’t used to feeling. Receiving over 20 Grammys, having your albums given perfect scores by the most respected publications, having your shoes sell out in seconds and then resold for thousands on eBay, it is hard to imagine that anything could make Kanye West nervous. But today did.

This achievement isn’t an end of a chapter for Kanye West, it is still just the beginning. Like his fellow graduates, who received their degrees in a more conventional way, today marks a moment where everything can become easier. Now the College Dropout is rebranded as Dr. West. Now his art has yet another huge co-sign. Now he can tell his late mother that he did finally get that college degree. Like Kanye told the SAIC crowd today, things will be easier now that he can say he has a degree from the Art Institute of Chicago. And I was more than glad I could be there to witness it all in person.
