ACL Fest Weekend 2 Day 3 in Photos: Chappell Roan, That Mexican OT, Orville Peck & More

Singer Chappell Roan proved why her star is on the rise with a memorable golden hour set for the final day of the Austin City Limits Music Festival (Photo by Dan Garcia/The Early Registration).

Day 3 of the Austin City Limits Festival’s second weekend capped off the event in a sweltering fashion, with temperatures hitting record highs. Despite the heat, festival-goers were treated to a diverse lineup of artists, delivering high-energy performances across multiple stages. Here’s a recap of the highlights from the final day.

Petey Petey kicked off the day on the IHG Stage with his usual quirky charm, drawing the audience in by broadcasting the Bears vs. Jaguars game on a giant screen behind him while he performed. His mix of comedic antics and emotional alt-pop songs set the tone for a fun-filled day.

Misterwives On the Honda Stage, Misterwives brought an electrifying performance, with lead singer Mandy Lee delivering her signature dynamic stage presence. Their set closed with fan-favorites “Reflections” and “Our Own House,” complete with energetic guitar riffs and infectious beats that had the crowd bouncing along.

Medium Build Next up was Medium Build on the Miller Lite Stage, blending alt-rock and introspective lyrics into a soulful performance. Their set captivated the crowd as they shared personal stories through music, creating a strong connection with the audience.

Bakar On the T-Mobile Stage, Bakar delivered his unique blend of indie rock and hip-hop. His laid-back yet powerful performance stood out as one of the cooler moments of the hot afternoon, with tracks like “Hell N Back” getting the crowd swaying despite the heat.

Orville Peck Orville Peck graced the Honda Stage in his signature fringed mask, bringing a blend of country and alternative music to life. His haunting baritone voice and western aesthetic captivated the audience, especially during tracks like “Dead of Night.” And for the cherry on top, Peck invited Willie Nelson on stage for a memorable collaboration.

Kevin Abstract Over on the IHG Stage, Kevin Abstract, formerly of Brockhampton, brought an introspective and energetic performance, blending his personal, raw lyrics with an upbeat production. His set was a mix of old favorites and newer tracks, as he engaged with the crowd, offering a deeply personal connection through his music.

That Mexican OT Bringing his blend of Texas hip-hop to the T-Mobile Stage, That Mexican OT had the crowd hyped with tracks like “Johnny Dang.” His rapid-fire flow and heavy beats kept the energy high as festival-goers flocked to his set, even as fans for Chappell Roan began gathering nearby.

Chappell Roan The star of the day was Chappell Roan, who performed to one of the largest crowds ACL has ever seen. Her energetic and theatrical set on the American Express Stage was a festival highlight, especially when she performed “Pink Pony Club,” her final performance of the track in 2024. Fans sporting pink cowboy hats and “Midwest Princess” merch filled the area, making this one of the most memorable moments of the weekend.

Qveen Herby Closing out the night on the IHG Stage was Qveen Herby, whose unique blend of hip-hop, R&B, and witchy visuals made for a spellbinding performance. Dressed in a flowing purple velvet cloak, she moved through her set with hits like “Balenciaga Dreams” and “Abracadabra,” offering a perfect close to the final day of ACL.

Day 3 was packed with unforgettable moments, from Petey’s humor to Chappell Roan’s record-breaking crowd. Despite the heat, the artists brought their best, closing out Weekend 2 of ACL with a bang.

The Neighbourhood Brings The Nu Waves Tour to Milwaukee with Kevin Abstract

Moments ago, California indie rock band The Neighbourhood (“The NBHD”) stepped off stage after a memorable sold out performance at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee, WI. Known most for their #1 alt-rock hit, ‘Sweater Weather’, the Jesse Rutherford led group performed much more than their A-side singles and brought some talented supporting acts to set the tone for the rest of the night. With some awesome opening sets from Canadian R&B artist, JAHKOY, and one of rap’s most exciting emerging artists, Kevin Abstract, The Neighbourhood had a tough act to follow, and fortunately for their Wisconsin fans, The NBHD put on as great of a headlining performance as the talented artists before them.

Kicking off the Nu Waves Tour tonight was indie rap artist, Kevin Abstract. An artist who admittedly draws inspiration from Childish Gambino, an super-talented but very polarizing rapper, Kevin Abstract is nerdy and weird in the best most abstract way. Not only did he perform a quarter of his set in his signature motorcycle helmet, but he did it while someone was waving a flag throughout the show, moments before he busted out a Razor scooter. And although Abstract has definitely built a core fan base in the past couple years especially, the Texas-native turned a lot of heads with his music video for ‘Echo’, easily one of the best videos of 2015. Performing ‘Echo’, ‘American Boyfriend’, ‘Empty’ and more, Abstract gave fans a taste of his debut, MTV1987, and what they can expect from his forthcoming album, They Shoot Horses. He is certainly his own artist, but if you’re a fan of Childish Gambino, Tyler the Creator, Frank Ocean, Kid Cudi or anyone in between, you’ll love Kevin Abstract.

Following Abstract’s energetic performance was JAHKOY, also not an indie rock performer. While you may expect The Neighborhood to recruit other indie rock artists, perhaps ones that sound like lesser versions of the headliners, you couldn’t be more mistaken. Although it definitely makes sense to stay within your “genre” to set the tone for your forthcoming performance, The NBHD flipped the script by recruiting an R&B singer and a rap artist. And if it were just any R&B artist, or any rapper, this method could have easily failed. However it would be difficult for The NBHD to have chosen any two better emerging acts in the hip-hop world than JAHKOY and Abstract. JAHKOY is seeing a huge wave of success and co-signs in the past year, especially with the debut of his single ‘Odd Future’ on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio just a few months ago. Lowe wasn’t the only huge name in music to give the Def Jam artist a big co-sign, as Drake later played the same record on his OVO Sound radio program. While still building up a discography of his own in his very young career, JAHKOY introduced himself to fans tonight with a selection of some of his newest records, and while many didn’t expect to attend an R&B concert tonight, they are glad they did.

After a brief intermission between performances, it was time for The NBHD’s return to Milwaukee. Performing in support of their 2015 album, Wiped Out!, the guys opened with the LP’s record, ‘Greetings From Califournia’. And while the crowd overwhelming enjoyed the performances from Abstract and JAHKOY, you could instantly tell this was the moment they were waiting for. Throughout the night the crowd was singing along every word, whether it was one of Wiped Out!’s B-side tracks, or whether it was a track from The NBHD’s earlier years. The energy never reached a low point, even for the band’s most laid back records, and all eyes watched Rutherford’s every move throughout the night. Closing the night with two awesome performances of their number one hit, ‘Sweater Weather’ and Wiped Out!’s equally successful closing track ‘R.I.P. 2 My Youth’, The NBHD definitely delivered for Milwaukee tonight.

Are music videos a lost art in 2015? With MTV and VH1 airing more reality television programs than actual music videos, it is no surprise that a lot of artists have abandoned the music video route of promotion. Fortunately not all artists subscribe to such logic. Many superstar artists still know that fans crave visuals, even if they are streaming it from their phone or tablet. And a lot of emerging artists know that creating some dope visuals are a great way to gain exposure and put your name on the map. Check out our favorite music videos from this past year and see who got our number one spot.

Stream London O’Connor’s New Album “O∆”

BY WILL LAMPEY

London O’Connor isn’t the average rapper. Continuing to push the boundaries of the perception of Hip-Hop’s sound, along with buddies Kevin Abstract and BROCKHAMPTON, London focuses the album’s sound towards warm palettes, creating a comforting soundscape. He produced the album entirely on his own and continues to prove the possibilities are endless for a 2015 “bedroom”, artist as Kevin puts it.

Vic Mensa and Kevin Abstract Beef Over Twitter

Apparently Vic Mensa isn’t a fan of rapper Kevin Abstract, or at the very least he doesn’t think that Kevin Abstract has the hottest page on Soundcloud right now. Last night Vic posed a question on Twitter, “hottest page on Soundcloud?” When one follower replied, saying that Kevin Abstract has the hottest Soundcloud, Vic replied with a big “No”.

When Abstract caught word that Roc Nation‘s newest artist wasn’t a fan, he laughed at Vic’s reply with a tweet of his own. Abstract also compared Vic to a young Chance The Rapper, a comparison that Vic likely hears way too often. Next (perhaps as a subtweet aimed Abstract’s way) Vic posted a picture of his BMW (which has since been deleted), prompting Kevin Abstract to tweet a hilarious response. “Vic mensa just subtweeted me and flexed his bimmer. im currently broke af in my bedroom watching mean girls.”

We are a big fan of both artists but we have to give the “W” to Kevin, unless Vic posts a picture of himself watching Mean Girls in his bimmer, in which case the win goes to Vic.

Check out Kevin Abstract’s tweets and compare both the rappers’ Soundclouds below.
