Is Mike Posner’s “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” on the Road to Become a 2016 Hit?

You may not hear his name echoed as much as it was circa 2010, but Mike Posner has definitely had a great 2015. Totally reinventing his sound, Posner put out one hell of an EP with The Truth, he traveled across the country with his impromptu “Ninja Shows”, and he even received a Grammy nomination for his writing on Maroon 5’s ‘Sugar’, as record that Posner originally wrote for himself.

And although Posner’s comeback single, ‘I Took a Pill in Ibiza’, was released back in April of this year and some may have believed the shelf life for radio spins had since expired, it looks like the track is finally receiving the commercial success that it deserves. This past week (December 13-19), Posner’s ‘I Took a Pill in Ibiza’ finally crossed over into pop’s Top 100 most played songs of the week, ranking at #70.

While the record’s new success on pop radio is unexpected, it really shouldn’t be. Posner’s breakout single, ‘Cooler Than Me’ became the song of the summer in 2010, although it originally released with rapper Big Sean on Posner’s A Matter of Time mixtape in March of 2009, a year before taking over the pop airwaves. If ‘Pill’s’ current trend continues, working its way up week-by-week from its current spot on the charts, the single could definitely dominate 2016 similar to ‘Cooler Than Me’s’ commercial success over 5 years ago.

The 20 Best Concert Tours of 2015

Best Tours

2015 saw a lot of great concert tours, from J. Cole’s Forest Hills Drive Tour with Big Sean, YG and Jeremih to Taylor Swift’s huge 1989 World Tour. Some tours sold out stadiums and arenas, selling out the entire tour before it even begun, and some tours were in small intimate venues, either strategically or because simple supply and demand. Some had stacked lineups top to bottom and some introduced us to a lot of great new artists. Festivals like Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Coachella were bigger than ever this year, but that didn’t stop your favorite artists from building up some great shows of their own.

Mike Posner is currently on the road, traveling across the United States with a few friends while he makes stops in a number of cities for surprise pop-up shows, for crowds of just a couple hundred people. Last night, Posner brought this tour of intimate performances to Chicago’s Lincoln Park, which holds some of the best views of the Chitown skyline. Introduced by his friend and co-writer, Adam Friedman, Mike performed his new EP, The Truth, as well as his catalog of hits (‘Cooler Than Me’, ‘Please Don’t Go’) and even some unheard music from his forthcoming sophomore album. The scenery was beautiful, as Posner and some of his most dedicated fans hung out just before dusk, playing music and sharing laughs.

Last month, singer/producer Mike Posner shared a huge sneak peek of his forthcoming album. Contrasting greatly from his hip-hop influenced college-pop tracks circa his hit-record ‘Cooler Than Me’, Posner has discovered a whole new sound. In an email to fans, Mike wrote “So I’m very hesitant to sound douchey like I’m trying to sell you something….I’m just EXCITED. If you want to stream the Truth for free forever, here’s the link …that’s totally cool with me.  BUT, If the music does something for you and you’d like to support me as a patron, you can purchase the TRUTH EP here. I love you guys.” Mike finished the email with a big thank you to his fans,

“Thank you so much for allowing me to not get a real job and focus on making this art for you. Again, these are four songs from the upcoming album.”

EP Review: The Truth | Mike Posner

The Truth
BY DAN GARCIA

The Truth, a new four-track EP from singer Mike Posner, is described by the man himself as “four songs selected from my upcoming album. They are best listened to the way they were written: at night, and alone. I hope you enjoy.” Well it is 12:45 AM in Chicago, and I’m laying in bed with just my laptop, while the four records play on repeat. And that’s the truth. Taking Mike’s advice, and even if you don’t, The Truth, is an amazing introduction to Mike Posner’s sophomore album, a sophomore album that fans have been waiting for (and for many years). And if this is your first introduction to Posner, or if you want a reminder, Mike Posner is a singer from Detroit, whose solid fan base (which he built from rap-influence pop mixtapes, made during his time at Duke University) help launch his first big hit, ‘Cooler Than Me’, the summer anthem of 2010. After a long solo hiatus, producing hits for artists like Justin Bieber, scraping a number of sophomore album attempts, and his first number one record (with Maroon 5’s ‘Sugar’), we now are finally on the verge of “the new Mike Posner” with The Truth.

Mike Posner Sings About Police Brutality In “The Voice Of The Unheard”

Earlier today, singer/producer Mike Posner shared what he, as a while male, has learned about being black in America. Growing up in Detroit, making hip-hop music, being close friends with Big Sean, Mike came to the conclusion that despite his background he has “no idea what it’s like to be black in America.” Because of this background, which differs a lot from the African-American artists making songs about race relations and police brutality in America, Mike’s new record ‘The Voice Of The Unheard’, provides a unique perspective of America in 2015.

“Last they night they killed a man and then they hid behind their laws. I noticed that my skin was the wrong color for my cause,” Posner sings in his power new track. Speaking on behalf of those with no voice, Posner’s new folk-inspired sound continues to be more personal than his music to date.
