Childish Gambino’s third studio album, …Awaken, My Love!, is just around the corner, currently scheduled for a December 2nd release. And while fans have been patiently waiting, wondering what Donald Glover’s next LP would sound like, fans now have a first taste as Gambino debuted the album’s lead single ‘Me And Your Momma’ moments ago on Beats 1 Radio with Zane Lowe.

And if the awesome new track sounds familiar, you may have heard it before. Not only did Glover perform the record for thousands of fans at his PHAROS concerts in Joshua Tree, CA, but he also previewed the track for fans during his Bonnaroo performance in 2015. If this track is any indication of what the rest of the album will sound like, don’t be surprised if …Awaken, My Love! ends up being Gambino’s best and most critically acclaimed album to date.

It’s amazing how fast the internet can catch on to things. Just minutes after Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) broke his blackout on social media to share the announcement and album artwork for his forthcoming LP, “…Awaken, My Love!”, Twitter quickly noticed that the cover was in front of us all along.

In a recent episode from Glover critically acclaimed FX series “Atlanta”, the artwork for Childish Gambino’s upcoming album is displayed in the background, propped up in a bookshelf. While only time will tell, it will be interesting to find out if there are any more Childish Gambino easter eggs hidden in Glover’s hit show, which was already renewed for a second season.

Earlier this week reliable rumors began to circulate, as to the release of Childish Gambino’s third studio album. With since deleted listings for the LP appearing on various Amazon sites, and an advertisement for the album appearing at various FYE stores throughout the country, it looked like Donald Glover was nearing the release of his first new project since STN MTN / Kauai.

Those rumors have now been confirmed, as the Atlanta creator has shared the album artwork for his previously rumored LP, titled …Awaken, My Love! While it is still yet to be confirmed whether or not the album is releasing on December 2nd, we couldn’t be any more excited. Fans have been patiently awaiting an official release, ever since Gambino previewed new music at his PHAROS concerts in Joshua Tree, CA earlier this year.

Peep the album artwork for …Awaken, My Love! below.

While fans still await an announcement from Donald Glover himself, it appears that Childish Gambino’s next album (his first new project since STN MTN / Kauai) is less than a month away. Reportedly titled Awaken, My Love, the rapper’s third studio LP is expected for a December 2nd release, according to a number of sources.

Fans first noticed the news of the forthcoming album, when a fan’s local FYE store advertised the upcoming release. Also, websites like Amazon Canada and Amazon UK both began advertising the release, listing which have now both been taken down.

We don’t want to bet on anything before Glover directly announces the album, but since fans are still awaiting an official release since Donald previewed new material at his PHAROS concerts in Joshua Tree, CA, a new LP would certainly make sense.

Check out a fan’s local FYE advertising the release of Gambino’s new album below.

Childish Gambino news is rare in 2016 while Donald Glover has shifted his focus on his forthcoming FX show Atlanta. So when Chance The Rapper gave a fan on reddit this weekend a simple one-word response, Chance and Bino fans everywhere rejoiced. During Chance’s reddit “ask me anything” fan Q&A, a fan asked the Chicago rapper:

“Does the Chance and Childish Gambino collab album/mixtape still exist?”

With just a few letters, Chance gave the answer we were all hoping for by replying yes. While he didn’t give any details, the fact that the music has been actually recorded gets rap fans everywhere hopeful that the project will be released. However, since Chance just released his highly anticipated album/mixtape, Coloring Book, and given how busy Childish Gambino is, don’t expect the project anytime soon.

Are music videos a lost art in 2015? With MTV and VH1 airing more reality television programs than actual music videos, it is no surprise that a lot of artists have abandoned the music video route of promotion. Fortunately not all artists subscribe to such logic. Many superstar artists still know that fans crave visuals, even if they are streaming it from their phone or tablet. And a lot of emerging artists know that creating some dope visuals are a great way to gain exposure and put your name on the map. Check out our favorite music videos from this past year and see who got our number one spot.

Throwback Thursday Review: Camp | Childish Gambino

Camp
BY EVAN VOGEL

Obtaining credibility in hip-hop is not a task easily done. Fundamentally, it’s an art form that manifested from an extensive history of systemic violence that targeted African Americans. Hip-hop music became the voice of the people in underdeveloped and neglected areas like The Bronx, in New York. The artful expression of anguish. Throughout the late-70’s and 80’s, hip-hop started diversifying its sound and began its stretch into mainstream appeal where it has since remained. When the art form itself took a grand ascension into popularity, with it came a number of imposters. Rappers who talk a life they never lived, tearing at the very roots of hip-hop. “What’s the point of rapping if you can’t be yourself huh? That’s why I come first like my cellphone.” Childish Gambino’s cry of acceptance rings out with all the gusto of a new school rapper who has found identity in his nerdiness via pop-culture reference-rap on debut album Camp.

Rather than be imposter, Gambino plays the role of outsider. Outsider to a genre that he loves and respects yet feels suspect because of his social status, mixed-appearance, nerdish tendencies and the fact that he grew up knowing both of his parents. All outdated concepts, even in 2011 but his statements retain their earnesty because of ‘show, don’t tell’ rap style. Over the chime of a high piano chord and orchestral drums and violins that switch to a distorted synth, Gambino reminisces on stealing Tommy Hilfiger from the 7th grade lost and found, and pointing out racism’s subtlety in society by not feeling black enough for the barber shops he frequented as a teen. His infatuation seems to be with changing the perception of those doubt him as a serious threat in hip-hop.

How does he follow through with that? Well, the man can definitely rap. Rhythmically, he is as advanced as any veteran and it’s extremely noticeable over the largely self-produced instrumentals that often sound grand and complex enough to echo influence of Kanye’s, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. His verses are internal conversations with himself and the choruses become declarations of self-awareness sung beautifully by Gambino himself. By now it is fair to identify his effectiveness as at least a triple threat on the album. Serving as producer, rapper and singer work to make the album all the more personal. He is at his best when he leaves behind his dominant wielded metaphors and bares his emotional soul on the track. Tracks like ‘Bonfire’, ‘LES’ and ‘Hold You Down’ show that Gambino has more to offer than wit. He competently reflects on relationships and life in a way that is both critical and heart-grabbing.

In the end, I think Gambino gets lost in the assumption that hip-hop music is as unaccepting of nerdiness as his high school classmates were. In reality, hip-hop artists have a rich history of being classically defined a nerd. From being huge fans of chess like Wu-tang Clan’s GZA or Eminem’s child-like sense of love for comic books. His nerd-status in life becomes a metaphor for how he is looked at in the rap-game but it isn’t incredibly accurate. To the average listener, Gambino never was that nerdy kid in high-school, their first perception of him is that he is a well rounded rapper/singer. Luckily his wittiness and wicked flow carry him through the songs that focus on loose metaphors about his feelings of false-insecurity while the songs focused on things other than his own perception of self show signs of that fuel that made artists like Drake famous.

In an interview with HipHopDX, Long Beach rapper Vince Staples surprised many when he gave a lot of praise to the rapping of Donald Glover, through his Childish Gambino rap alias and most specifically his record ‘3005’. And despite being an unlikely pair, with Staples rapping about gangbanging in Long Beach and with Gambino fighting an uphill battle in establishing rap credibility while balancing his careers as a stand up comedian, writer and actor, the two have now teamed up!

Along with Gambino’s producer Ludwig Goransson, Staples and Glover are credited for writing a track for Ryan Coogler’s forthcoming film, “Creed”. The record is titled “Waiting For My Moment” and it has been submitted for the “Best Original Song” category, for the Oscars. So let’s hope it gets a nom and let’s hope we hear the song soon, because the collaboration is sure to be a great one!

Stay tuned for more information while we receive it.
