The Top 7 Chicago Artists to Watch For in 2015

BY MICHAEL TRISTANI

It seems like every other year, one or two cities has a flock of young, new artists that all blow up simultaneously and take over the game. In 2012 it was New York with A$AP Rocky, Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson, etc. and Los Angeles, with the powerhouse that was TDE with releases of Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, Ab-Soul’s Control System, and Schoolboy Q’s Habits & Contradictions. 2013 wasn’t the same, which was just a year full of big hitter releases from Kanye, A$AP Rocky, Drake and J.Cole, to name a few. In 2014, it was Atlanta. With the unstoppable force that was Young Thug, Rich Homie Quan, Rae Sremmurd, Peewee Longway, etc. However, in 2015 you can expect the next city in the cycle to be Chicago. Everyone had a taste of the fresh raw talent from the Windy City in 2013 with the breakout releases of Chance The Rapper’s Acid Rap and Vic Mensa’s Innanetape. While both of them have been working on their upcoming, much-anticipated releases, 2014 was a relatively quiet year for Chicago. With many of these artists on the list bubbling beneath the surface, expect many of these artists on this list to breakout and have a huge year.

We don’t know a ton about Big Sean’s forthcoming album, the followup to his sophomore album Hall of Fame, but we do it will be “raw” and his darkest album yet, as Sean told us in our recent interview. Today though we do know another huge feature for the upcoming project, as a video surfaced on YouTube, containing a snippet of one of the album’s songs. As heard in the video, Big Sean and Drake have a track on the album, which should be huge as their collaboration on Drake’s ‘All Me’ was fire. Check out the snippet of the track below.

Now Kanye is not only the first, but also the second, rapper to ever do a song with The Beatles’ legendary frontman Paul McCartney, as the two have combined talents with the lovely Rihanna for her track ‘FourFiveSeconds’. The song is available now on iTunes and was released via Roc Nation and Rihanna’s Westbury Road Entertainment company.

While mourning the loss of A$AP Yams (founder of the A$AP Mob), things for real as New Jersey rapper Retchy P told his followers on Twitter that it should have been Wale who died instead. After being called out for virtually no reason, Wale responded and the two exchanged a number of tweets. Even MMG‘s Fat Trel got involved as things started to get real. Check out the exchange below.

Album Review: What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World | The Decemberists

The Decemberists
BY NICHOLAS HAGAR

The Decemberists, a group that formed in 2000, has been around long enough to develop a constant sound. They know what their fans expect, and they know how to deliver that exactly. And this shows, not entirely in a good way, in their seventh studio album, What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World, released January 20, 2015, with Capitol Records

‘The Singer Addresses His Audience’ is a powerful start to the album. It’s an interesting, tongue-in-cheek monologue that critiques the relationship between a band and its listeners. With lines like “We’re aware that you cut your hair in the style that our drummer wore in the video”, it makes its point effectively, and that point is presented as the vocals step up and down in carefully measured increments. All of this happens over well-produced instrumentation, as acoustic guitar and cello give way to electric guitar, kicking drums, and a thundering chorus.

Watch Milwaukee’s WebsterX’s Amazing New Video for “doomsday”

BY DAN GARCIA

When I was first told to check out WebsterX from a friend of the site, I was skeptical, solely because the young MC hails from Milwaukee (which I admit isn’t fair). Sure, Milwaukee is my hometown and is less than 100 miles away from one of the best (if not best) music hubs in the world in Chicago, but let’s be real…Milwaukee has not historically been the best city for rap. Hell, the biggest rapper to ever come out of Milwaukee is Coo Coo Cal. And while ‘My Projects’ did reach the number one spot on the Billboard rap charts, that was just one song and well over a decade ago. ‘My Projects’ was an awesome track, but Cal was definitely not an artist that could put his whole city on the map. You would think that the city that boasts the “World’s Biggest Music Festival” would have at least a few worthy artists in the world’s best genre of music right now. But so far, it really hasn’t.
