These are the highlights of this past week in music! Hopefully you can bump these tracks on your way to work to brighten up your Monday mornings, and to stay up-to-date on today’s music. This week we have another new collaboration from Chance The Rapper and Noname Gypsy, new amazing visuals from Milwaukee’s WebsterX, and a new music video from the Childish Gambino co-signed Kari Faux.
There is no better male female team in hip-hop right now than Chicago’s Chance The Rapper and Noname Gypsy. Everytime the two get on the same track, it’s fire. Noname had a stand out verse on Acid Rap, the project with introduced Chance to a lot of his current fans. Then Noname also held her own with all the rap giants who contributed features on Surf. Most recently too, the two also teamed up on one of Chance and Lil B’s tracks (check out our review of that mixtape here). This time around, the two rapping poets have again linked up, for Chance’s new track ‘Isreal’. And if you couldn’t guess, it’s another amazing collab.
The wait is finally over as Chance The Rapper and The Social Experiment have released the highly anticipated album, Surf, for free on iTunes. The Donnie Trumpet led project comes in at 16-tracks and has an all-star cast (no exaggeration). As expected, Chance The Rapper is featured on most of the album’s tracks, however Surf also has appearances from Big Sean, J. Cole, Raury, B.O.B., BJ The Chicago Kid, Busta Rhymes, Janelle Monae, Noname Gypsy, Jeremih, Quavo (Migos), Kyle, King Louie, Saba, Erykah Badu, Jesse Boykins III, Saba, D.R.A.M. and Joey Purp. Wow!
Late last year, Chicago rapper NoName Gypsy tweeted “We go where the light is. #surf #myHottestVerseEver”, which seemed to suggest that she had a feature on Chance the Rapper and the Social Experiment’s upcoming album Surf. This should come as no major surprise as she gave a great verse on Chance’s Acid Rap project. And now after last night, the hints from her tweet hold a little more weight, as she opened up for Mick Jenkins at SOBs in New York City. During her performance she rapped a verse which she told fans would be on Surf. No word yet if “We Go Where the Light Is” is the title of the Surf track, but check out NoName Gypsy’s performance of her verse below.
Also be sure to check out our photos of Chance’s recent “Open Mike” event in Chicago, where he brought out King Louie and Hannibal Buress to perform with a number of young Chicago artists.
It seems like every other year, one or two cities has a flock of young, new artists that all blow up simultaneously and take over the game. In 2012 it was New York with A$AP Rocky, Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson, etc. and Los Angeles, with the powerhouse that was TDE with releases of Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, Ab-Soul’s Control System, and Schoolboy Q’s Habits & Contradictions. 2013 wasn’t the same, which was just a year full of big hitter releases from Kanye, A$AP Rocky, Drake and J.Cole, to name a few. In 2014, it was Atlanta. With the unstoppable force that was Young Thug, Rich Homie Quan, Rae Sremmurd, Peewee Longway, etc. However, in 2015 you can expect the next city in the cycle to be Chicago. Everyone had a taste of the fresh raw talent from the Windy City in 2013 with the breakout releases of Chance The Rapper’s Acid Rap and Vic Mensa’s Innanetape. While both of them have been working on their upcoming, much-anticipated releases, 2014 was a relatively quiet year for Chicago. With many of these artists on the list bubbling beneath the surface, expect many of these artists on this list to breakout and have a huge year.
