The 10 Best Fictional Musicians

BY TER STAFF

Hustle & Flow

Throughout television and cinema we are constantly introduced to singers, bands and rappers whom we desperately wish were real, but usually the best we can hope for is a sequel. Most recently we have Fox and Terrance Howard’s new series Empire, which follows rapper turned label head Lucious Lyon. Next up we will have Donald Glover’s (Childish Gambino) upcoming FX comedy Atlanta, which will follow two cousins who have very different views on how to rise up in the Atlanta rap scene. To help build the anticipation to these two series, and to get nostalgic on past fictional artists, have comprised a list of the best, most swagged out, and absolutely awesome musicians whom we wish were real (and even one who kind of is).

Azealia Banks Sounds Off on Kendrick Lamar’s Comments on Race

In a recent interview with Billboard, rapper Kendrick Lamar gave a number of comments on policy brutality and race. Specifically, Kendrick explained “I wish somebody would look in our neighborhood knowing that it’s already a situation, mentally, where it’s f—ked up. What happened to (Michael Brown) should’ve never happened. Never. But when we don’t have respect for ourselves, how do we expect them to respect us? It starts from within. Don’t start with just a rally, don’t start from looting, it starts from within.” While many may agree with King Kendrick, rapper Azealia Banks did not, engaging in a number of tweets which sound off against Kendrick’s comments and calls his remarks “the dumbest sh*t I’ve ever heard a black man say.” Check out Kendrick’s full interview here, where he also pays respect to Iggy Azalea (who had a recent feud with Banks), and check out Azealia Banks’ full comments on her Twitter below.

BY TER STAFF

Earlier this week Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) tweeted and soon deleted a link to a mysterious countdown that was set for 2:00 a.m. on January 9th (Central time). The countdown link was all-black, sleek and simply showed the counter in the bottom right of the page with no information as what it was for. While we could only speculate what it is was for, the wait is now over.

The Best Snapchat Recreations of Your Favorite Rappers

BY TER STAFF

Social media is bigger than ever, and one of the biggest social media apps today is Snapchat. For those not familiar (if you live under a rock), Snapchat allows users to send photos and videos to their friends that can be viewed for up to ten seconds. After the photo or video is seen, it cannot be viewed again (unless you screenshot or save it yourself of course). Anyone with a Snapchat knows that the best part of the app is being able to draw on the the pictures. This has allowed the more creative and artistically inclined to make some brilliant recreations of popular rappers. Check out some of our favorite rapper recreations on Snapchat, with appearances by Drake, Lil Jon, Big Sean, Kanye and many more.

Countdown: Expect Something Big from Childish Gambino on January 9th

While his Twitter now remains as a blackout, Childish Gambino tweeted and since deleted a link to a countdown set for 2:00 a.m. on January 9th (Central time), a link which his brother also tweeted. The countdown link is all-black, sleek and simply shows the counter in the bottom right of the page with no information as what its for. Is it the teaser for his new television show Atlanta? Is it new music? Is it a huge announcement? Only time will tell, but definitely stay tuned.

Album Review: The Balcony | Catfish and the Bottlemen

The Balcony
BY NICHOLAS HAGAR

Catfish and the Bottlemen’s initial singles, all of which are present on The Balcony, led them to critical praise. They performed at over 30 festivals last summer, and their track ‘Kathleen’ was ranked as MTV’s hottest track last April. Whether or not the band deserves this acclaim could be debated. Their debut album The Balcony is an act of constant escalation. Many of its best tracks start out gently, but for better or worse, the band cannot seem to avoid intensifying until the guitar is wailing and the vocals screaming. Every song must keep moving forward at a near overwhelming level; on the rare occasions that the album hits pause, it seems to lose something.

The band, which formed in Llandudno, North Wales, consists of lead vocalist Van McCann, lead guitar Johnny Bond, bass guitar Benji Blakeway, and drummer Bob Hall. The Balcony was released with label Communion Records in the UK on September 15, 2014, and in the US on January 6, 2015.
