Childish Gambino Headlines Chicago’s United Center for Rapper’s Last Tour

Music fans in Chicago had their work cut out for them Saturday night, as many were forced to choose between The Breaks Music Festival at Toyota Park, headlined by the legendary Wu Tang Clan, or the headlining show from the rapper who got his rap name from an online Wu Tang Clan name generator, Childish Gambino. But if you ask us, those who made the right decision went with the latter, as Gambino (Donald Glover) likely put on his last show in Chicago, and it was a memorable one at that.

The night was one that Chicago will not soon forget for many reasons, so let’s just start with the first. “If you’re at this show, then you know this is the last Gambino tour ever,” Glover told the packed crowd at the United Center. Throughout his rising music career, Childish Gambino has put on a number of diverse and amazing performances in the Windy City, so if Saturday night was truly the last, you should not have missed out.

From his I AM DONALD Tour stop for 1,000 fans at Park West in 2011 where a young Glover performed a half stand-up half music show, to his tour with Chicago’s own, Chance The Rapper, before Chance started to receive national attention, and of course his rainy Lollapalooza performance in 2014, there are too many great Childish Gambino memories in the city to count. It’s very fitting that Glover will retire Childish Gambino’s history in Chicago with a headlining performance at the historic 20,000+ capacity United Center.

The performance was also one you shouldn’t have missed because it was Chicago’s first chance to hear tracks from Gambino’s critically acclaimed Awaken, My Love! LP, as well as new tracks from Childish Gambino’s last album (which has yet to be released). Glover even chose a new track (‘Algorythm’) to open up the set. Despite being a record that the majority of the crowd wasn’t familiar with, fans were feeling the vibes from the very start.

While many fans would have loved to hear songs from the first half of Gambino’s discography, ‘Freaks and Geeks’, ‘Bonfire’, ‘You See Me’ and ‘Heartbeat’ to name a few, Chicago was able to enjoy a number of tracks that they haven’t heard from the Georgia-native on a live stage.

Last night was also a special one, and unique from all tour stops to follow, because Glover dedicated his 2016 song ‘Riot’ to Mac Miller, who passed away on Friday. “He was the sweetest guy, this kid, he just loved music,” Glover told the crowd, while asking those with cellphones to not record. Before performing ‘Riot’, Glover continued, “I love you, Mac. And I just want to tell you guys I love you, and this song is for him.”

Early in their careers, coming up in the post-internet world around the same time, Miller and Glover both experienced criticism for their music being subjectively corny to some (as he told the crowd), and this was just one reason Glover relates to Mac on a wide scale.

Finally, the show was a special one not because of all the context surrounding it but just generally because it was a great performance. While we are sure Wu Tang kept the crowd on their feet, Donald Glover has put together a tour that he describes not as a concert but as church. The low lighting and artistic visuals throughout the night were a joy to watch and Glover’s dancing and energy were second to none.

And to complete an already amazing night, Glover treated fans with a four song encore of ‘Sober’, ‘3005’, ‘Sweatpants’ and of course his Grammy winning single ‘Redbone’, a perfect farewell to his loyal fans from the Second City.

If you have tickets for Childish Gambino’s current This Is America Tour then you’re in for an amazing night, however it may likely be your last night seeing the critically acclaimed rapper live in concert.

At the rapper’s opening and hometown show at the Infinite Energy Arena in Atlanta last night, Gambino (Donald Glover) told the crowd “If you’re at this show, then you know this is the last Gambino tour ever.” Does this mean that Donald Glover will continue to tour in the future, after he retires his Childish Gambino moniker? Only time will tell, but we certainly hope so.

Childish Gambino has been grinding for years. Although he had a great core fan base from the beginning, the world is finally starting to realize how talented Childish Gambino is on a wide scale. It’s bitter-sweet to see him end things in such a way. Donald Glover isn’t going anywhere, but Childish Gambino will certainly be missed.

Kanye West Finally Acknowledges Donald Glover (Childish Gambino)

Somewhere in the world, Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) is freaking the f*ck out because Kanye West has finally acknowledged him. Tweeting “Donald Glover is a free thinker”, Kanye West made reference to a fellow renaissance man who has been staning Kanye for many years.

From his many Kanye references in songs (“I’m headin’ west like I’m f*ckin blowing Kanye”) and interviews to dubbing himself “the son of Kanye” (which is a totally accurate comparison), the Atlanta creator rapper/producer/singer/actor/writer has been trying to get Kanye’s attention for years. And now that day has finally come! It only took Grammy nominations and a hit television show to happen first.

Let’s hope this leads to a future collaboration.

Check out Kanye’s tweet below.

Donald Glover surprised his music fans this morning by announcing a headlining arena tour under his Childish Gambino moniker, set for later this year.

His first tour since his 2014 “Deep Web Tour”, Glover has only performed a few festivals and solo shows in the past few years, as he has kept busy with his numerous movie roles and his FX series, “Atlanta”. Needless to say, fans have been hungry for a new tour, and this one will be the biggest yet taking his show from larger club venues to huge arenas.

The tour will kick off in Glover’s hometown of Atlanta on September 6th, and he will make stops in Chicago, Toronto, New York, Boston and more, until the headlining tour with Rae Sremmurd concludes on September 30th in Vancouver.

Presale for the tour begins tomorrow, with general public tickets beginning on Friday. Fans van visit Childish Gambino’s official website for more information.

Donald Glover will continue the journey of his Childish Gambino moniker with RCA Records. Announced this morning, Glover and his label/agency Wolf + Rothstein have signed a new recording and label deal with RCA.

Speaking on the news, RCA Record’s Chairman/CEO Peter Edge shared that RCA is “excited to join forces with (Glover) and Wolf + Rothstein to usher in the next phase of Childish Gambino’s musical career.” Currently, Glover’s next Childish Gambino album is scheduled to be his last, but let’s hope that this new partnership will put a change to that.

Childish Gambino Scores First Grammy Album of the Year Nomination with “Awaken, My Love!”

After scoring two Golden Globes for his FX series Atlanta, the Grammys have followed suit by recognizing the greatness that is Donald Glover, by nominating his Childish Gambino album Awaken, My Love!.

Scoring five nominations, including “Album of the Year” and “Record of the Year” (for the album’s lead single ‘Redbone’), Glover is set up to likely score his first Grammy and perhaps more. As the only Urban Contemporary album also nominated for Album of the Year, it would be a surprise if Glover at least doesn’t take home the W for Best Urban Contemporary Album.

The Grammys will air on CBS on Sunday, January 28th. We will surely tune in to see who takes home the award for Album of the Year.

Donald Glover Explains His Forthcoming Childish Gambino Retirement

Donald Glover broke hearts everywhere as he ended his headlining set at New York’s Governors Ball with the announcement that his next Childish Gambino album will be his last. “I’ll see you for the last (Childish) Gambino album,” Glover told the crowd.

And today, we have a little more context for Gambino’s forthcoming retirement. During an event to promote his FX series, “Atlanta”, Glover told the Huffington Post:

“There’s nothing worse than like a third sequel, like a third movie and we’re like, ‘again?’ You know, I like when something’s good and when it comes back there’s a reason to come back, there’s a reason to do that.”

If you ask us though, given the fact that his music is constantly evolving and getting better by each album, that’s enough reason to “come back”. Will Glover continue to make music under a new moniker, or without a stage name? Only time will tell. Perhaps Gambino will join so many rapper before him, and change his mind about his retirement day. But then again, how many other rappers have successful acting, writing and comedy careers that also need attention?

Donald Glover Announces That His Next “Childish Gambino” Album Will Be The Last

While fans at New York’s Governors Ball last night were treated to a memorable set and Childish Gambino’s only scheduled performance of 2017, fans also received some sad news as Donald Glover told the crowd that his next Childish Gambino album would be the last.

“I’ll see you for the last Gambino album.” – Glover told fans.

And while this is sad news no matter what way you spin it, don’t lose total hope. Although many think this is the end of Glover’s musical endeavors, since his acting career and FX series have been more than successful as of late, Glover said it will be the “last (Childish) Gambino album”, not his last album altogether.

Since Glover has been talking about ending his Childish Gambino moniker for awhile now, and because he doesn’t refer to himself in third person, his next album almost certainly will not be his last, just the last as Childish Gambino. So don’t be too disappointed!

Check out Gambino’s announcement at Governors Ball below.
