Celebrating the one-year anniversary of The Social Experiment’s collaborative album, Surf, Chance The Rapper and Donnie Trumpet have released a brand new 11-minute record, ‘The First Time’. Produced by Nico Segal & Nate Fox for The Social Experiment, the new record isn’t even a month removed from Chance’s new solo project, Coloring Book, but that doesn’t matter because the song is definitely a must listen.
While we don’t know if The Social Experiment (the Chance led Chicago collective which is much more than just Chance’s band) are still cooking up their collection of collaborative albums, of which Surf was just the first, we certainly hope so. When you get Donnie, Chance and company on the same record, you are bound to wind up with a quality track, some of which come in at 11-minutes long like this one.
Before the explosion his free album Acid Rap caused in early 2013, Chance the Rapper was a bubbling rapper whose name didn’t ring many bells outside his homeland of Chicago. His friends, obviously, were even more anonymous to the public eye, which is a statement that definitely doesn’t ring true today. Acid Rap was one of the most acclaimed, celebrated, and downright refreshing projects dropped in recent rap history, and Chance the Rapper to this day has yet to follow it up with any kind of solo project, paid-for single, or even any kind of record deal. Instead, Chance’s idea of consistency existed in touring his Acid Rap material as much as possible, collaborating and writing music for other artists, existing as an internet entity that exudes relevance without a label or management firms, but moreover, it existed in the idea of making music with his friends, and pushing his musical ensemble to the spotlight with him. Now, 758 days later, Chance’s horn-specialist Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment band (Peter Cottontale, Nate Fox, Greg “Stix” Landfair Jr., and Chance the Rapper) have released the long-awaited, frequently teased project, Surf.
Earlier today Chance The Rapper shared a photo of himself and Kanye West, making fans excited for a potential (and now speculated) collaboration. Well that wasn’t the only good news for Chance fans, because during a concert for Michigan State University tonight, Chance announced to fans that his highly anticipated album Surf (with The Social Experiment) is coming THIS WEEK.
Time to get excited because the surf waves are almost here! Chance has been working with Andre 3000, Frank Ocean and J. Cole (just to name a few), and while we don’t know a complete or exact list of features on Surf, we can definitely expect a quality follow-up to Acid Rap with some great features as well.
Check out the remix to Jeremih’s track ‘Planes’, as he stays local and recruits Chicago’s Chance The Rapper and The Social Experiment for the record. Norwegian rapper Lido also joins the Chicago artists on this one. The collaboration is definitely a must listen!

This week Chance the Rapper and Donnie Trumpet (of The Social Experiment) stopped by Power 105.1 for their first ever appearance on “The Breakfast Club” with DJ Envy, Charlamagne Tha God and Angela Yee. Its only right that the two Chi-town grown artists paid a visit to The Breakfast Club as the classic John Hughes film of the same name was filmed just outside of Chicago. Check out the full interview below as Chance talks about his come up, getting a phone call from Jay-Z, Obama and much more. Chance and Donnie also talk about their upcoming album Surf and Chance even gives an indirect shootout to The Early Registration for our coverage on his recent Open Mikeevents (around the 32:30 mark).

Big day for Chance the Rapper as his new feature with GQ was released, and to continue the momentum Chance is The Fader‘s new cover artist. The piece focuses on Chance’s Social Experiment group, which includes Chance himself, Donnie Trumpet, Peter Cottontale, and Nate Fox. The piece gives more details on the collective as well as the group’s upcoming album Surf, which The FADER explains how the project is often mislabeled as a Chance the Rapper album (while he is just one member of the group). Surf, which centers around the group’s Donnie Trumpet, is expected to release soon and is one of our Most Anticipated Albums of 2015.
