After debuting the record live during Vic Mensa’s headlining set at Lollapalooza, SAVEMONEY’s Vic Mensa and Joey Purp have teamed up again, this time for their ‘773 Freestyle’. Trading bars throughout the record, titled after Chicago’s area code, Mensa and Purp work together perfectly on the new track and sound better than ever. With references to everything from Killa Cam, the police, Future’s classic “Gucci flip flops” lyric and even Chance The Rapper’s Nate Fox produced record ‘Pusha Man’, this one is truly a freestyle at its core, but it’s fire none the less.
“And the murder rate higher than Dr. Jay’s socks, Purp be the Pusha Man, word to Nate Fox.” – Vic Mensa
SAVEMONEY‘s Towkio has announced his newest project and it’s just around the corner. Releasing next month, on July 7th, Towkio will drop his EP, Community Service 2, a follow up to his 2013 Community Service EP. The EP will feature his Savemoney brothers, including Vic Mensa and Joey Purp, and will be laced with production from Peter Cottontale, Smoko Ono, Mr. Carmack and more. The project was recorded at Rick Rubin’s Malibu residence “Shangri-La”, and is Towkio’s first new project his .Wav Theory mixtape.
Of the Adult Swim Singles Program, Chicago’s Joey Purp and SaveMoney producer Thelonious Martin have released their new record, ‘Bomaye’. The track features a unique blend of deep bass and a classic sound that go more than well with Purp’s flow, making for a great SaveMoney collaboration. If you like what you hear, definitely catch Purp on tour with Vic Mensa this summer and stay tuned as Thelonious Martin is releasing his project Late Night Programming later this year.
SAVEMONEY rapper and Chicago’s own, Towkio, surprised many with his awesome 2015 project, .Wav Theory, but the emerging rapper is already on to the next one as he recruited his friend and long-time collaborator Vic Mensa for his new record, ‘G W M’. Short for “gang with me”, ‘G W M’ isn’t a gang banging street record, rather it’s a fun Mr. Carmack and Kenny Segal produced track where Towkio raps about his whole squad, which as many know includes Vic, Chance The Rapper and many more. SAVEMONEY isn’t your average rap collective, and Towkio’s new track definitely helps show that.
Chicago’s SAVEMONEY is killing it right now! Chance The Rapper will be the first independent artist to perform on Saturday Night Live. Vic Mensa is preparing for his album release, while still performing all over the country. And now, not long after his Leather Corduroys album Season, the Chicago collective’s, rapper Joey Purp, has released a new solo record. Titled ‘Run It Up’, this is one of Joey’s first solo tracks since his 2012 project, The Purple Tape . Although it’s been years since The Purple Tape, his rapping definitely isn’t rusty. Whether he is rapping as 1/2 of Leather Corduroys or by himself, Purp is one of Chicago’s most talented young MCs right now.
Today marked the first day of Chicago’s North Coast Music Festival in 2015. Today Coasties saw some awesome performances from a number of different genres. Rap fans saw sets from MMG’s Wale, SAVEMONEY’s Leather Corduroys (Joey Purp and Kami de Chukwu) and the talented Skizzy Mars. Bassheads danced their asses off to performances from The Glitch Mob and Knife Party. And the old school fans even left happy, as they saw a great set from the legendary Widespread Panic. Day one had something for everyone, and we made sure to catch it all!
Check out our photos below, of what Day 1 of the North Coast Music Festival had to offer in 2015, and make sure not to miss tomorrow’s artists (Steve Aoki, D’Angelo and more).
While we have known about the signing for awhile, Jay-Z made the official announcement that Chicago’s own, Vic Mensa, is the newest member of Roc Nation Records. Perhaps the most interesting part about the deal is the story behind the signing, which dates back from over a year ago. Jay-Z’s right-hand-man at Roc Nation, executive Lenny Santiago, shared an awesome story about how he first pursued and eventually signed Vic Mensa.
As Santiago shares, while Vic Mensa’s “I don’t care which label you’re from” attitude almost stopped a deal from taking place, it was Mensa’s love for the music and culture that made the partnership happen.
Listen as Chicago rapper Towkio recruits fellow SAVEMONEY rapper, Chance the Rapper, for Towkio’s new track ‘Heaven Only Knows’. The song, which also features Lido and Eryn Allen Kane, is another new track from Towkio’s forthcoming .Wav Theory mixtape. Dropping April 28th, .Wav Theory is set to feature production from Peter Cottontail and Kaytranada, and guest vocals from Chance, Vic Mensa, Donnie Trumpet and more.
Last month Chicago rapper Towkio released his collaboration with his SAVEMONEY affiliate Vic Mensa on his song ‘Involved’ and his Social Experiment collaboration ‘Free Your Mind’, in anticipation of his forthcoming .wav Theory project. Today we have the official video for ‘Free Your Mind’. Check out the new music video below, which was directed by Peter Collins Campbell and co-directed by Towkio himself.
Let’s admit it, we all have a favorite rapper of two that we wish we started listening to well beyond when we actually did. So for our new series we will be showcasing an artist that you probably should be listening to by now, but for whatever reason maybe they flew under your radar, and you want to get up to date before they continue to take off. So for this week, there is no better rapper to showcase than Chicago’s Vic Mensa. With the release of Kanye, Vic, and Sia’s new collaboration ‘Wolves‘, there will be a lot of rap fans who are just now learning all there is to know about the SAVEMONEY rapper. Vic has been huge in the city of Chicago for quite some time, but maybe you have slept on him for too long. Don’t worry! We got you covered with a Late Pass.
