At first read, you may have been confused when you found out that Kendrick Lamar titled his new album To Pimp a Butterfly. After all, how does someone “pimp a butterfly” and what can that even mean? Well let us venture one possible (and likely) answer. Continue reading Why Is Kendrick Lamar’s Album Titled “To Pimp a Butterfly”?

Despite earlier reports that Kendrick Lamar’s previously untitled sophomore LP would actually be called [Untitled], hours ago, King Kendrick revealed the title and cover art for his forthcoming and highly anticipated LP. The album, which is named, To Pimp a Butterfly, is set to release on March 23rd through Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE). We aren’t quite sure how one “pimps a butterfly”, but we are anxious to find out.

Kendrick Lamar Reveals Why He Didn’t Attend the Grammys

No, he didn’t skip out because he was salty about losing to Macklemore. Earlier this morning, Kendrick Lamar sat down with radio personality Big Boy and revealed the real reason that he didn’t attend the Grammys this year to accept his awards in person. “I had to turn that album in,” Kendrick explained. “I was on a deadline, on the clock. It’s crazy, as a kid I never thought of no Grammy… writing raps that was way over my head. Just to be accomplished with any award it can be BET Awards or anything, it’s a compliment to me.” As Big Boy’s first guest on his new show, Kendrick also took time to spit a few bars on some Biggie beats. For those who have yet to hear, Kendrick’s new album will be available on March 23rd, and despite rumors, the title of the LP will not actually be called Untitled. We are still awaiting its official title, as Kendrick can’t reveal it because “Tod Dawg (Entertainment) will kill (him)” if he does.

It seems that the wait is finally over. Kendrick Lamar tweeted an iTunes pre-order link earlier today for his currently untitled sophomore album scheduled for release on March 23. His new single “The Blacker the Berry” sits at number 13 on the 16-song tracklist, with his lead single “i” released last fall not listed at all. You can pre-order the new album here.

Did TDE CEO Anthony Tiffith Take Shots at Big Sean for Dissing Kendrick Lamar?

BY TER STAFF

It looks like Anthony Tiffith, CEO of Tod Dawg Entertainment (TDE), did not take kindly to Big Sean’s subliminal Kendrick Lamar diss on his ‘Me, Myself & I‘ freestyle. In the new freestyle to promote his new album Dark Sky Paradise, Big Sean raps “Ya’ll bragging about so and so, like “Oh, he really it? The new n*gga in rap? Well can he really spit?”  Or do he just hide behind his skits like half of these rappers doin’, and ya’ll f*cking go and praise him in this bitch like they the savior of the sh*t (rap),” which may be subliminal shots to Kendrick Lamar, who many praise as the savior of rap. Well if Tiffith saw it like others did, he may have just expressed his opinion on his TwitterTiffith tweeted “YALL PLEASE LEAVE DOT (Kendrick) ALONE MAN.HE DONT TAKE NO 1 SERIOUS..HE DONT FUCK WITH NOBODY..PLZ, BECUZ WHEN HE GO,HES GONE & IT WONT BE SUBLIMINAL.” In simpler terms, Kendrick Lamar (as he did in his Big Sean collaboration ‘Control’) calls out rappers directly (not subliminally, perhaps in contrast to Big Sean). Is a Kendrick Lamar response coming soon?

Did Big Sean Diss Kendrick Lamar on His “My, Myself & I” Freestyle?

Looks like Big Sean may have took shots and dissed Kendick Lamar on his new ‘Me, Myself & I’ freestyle, which samples Beyonce’s 2003 track of the same name. Doesn’t look like it’s anything serious, after-all it’s only rap and Sean and Kendrick are friends, but in the track Sean disses a so-called “savior or rap”, a label often given to Sean’s fellow ‘Control’ rapper Kendrick Lamar. In the track, Big Sean raps:

“Ya’ll bragging about so and so, like “Oh, he really it? The new n*gga in rap? Well can he really spit?”  Or do he just hide behind his skits like half of these rappers doin’, and ya’ll f*cking go and praise him in this bitch like they the savior of the sh*t (rap).”

To provide a bit of context, not only is King Kendrick frequently referred to as rap’s savior (Google “rap savior” if you don’t believe us), but Kendrick’s critically acclaimed debut album, good kid m.A.A.d. city, has over 10 skits within the LP (which can’t really compare to any other rapper’s use of skits). Listen to the track (1:45 mark) below and judge for yourself.

Kendrick Lamar Releases New Boi-1da Produced Track, “The Blacker The Berry”

One day after winning two Grammys for his debut single ‘i’, from his forthcoming second studio album, Kendrick Lamar is back with a new fiery record. Over a gritty Boi-1da beat, he spits three vicious verses, addressing his own hypocrisy,  culture vultures, and the death of Trayvon Martin. He also shares the hook with Jamaican dancehall artist Assassin (you may recognize him from Kanye West’s 2013 album Yeezus). After the third verse, the record shifts into a smooth jazz melody crafted by frequent TDE collaborator Terrace Martin, along with what appears to be James Fauntleroy and a female vocalist. Kendrick’s next move sonically for his upcoming album is still unknown, but he’s now proven that he’s still musically ambitious and fearless on the mic, so the results should be fantastic.

Here at The Early Registration we like to pride ourselves on our music knowledge, to stay polished on our musical expertise our new feature is a little game of musical “6 Degrees”. For those who are unfamiliar, six degrees of separation is the theory that everyone in the world is connected by six or fewer steps, so we are now taking the liberty of connecting musicians by songs and features, who you would never think could be connected. This week our  piece is in honor of the upcoming 57th Annual Grammy Awards, where we will connect the two most opposite nominees for this year’s “Best Rap Performance” category, Christian rapper Lecrae and of course the always controversial Eminem. To spice things up, we will also include the other rappers in the category (Childish Gambino, Drake, Kendrick Lamar), all in just six steps.
