Stefan Ponce is more than just the producer behind your favorite records from Childish Gambino, Vic Mensa and Chance The Rapper. Although his name is forever attached to some of your favorite rappers, Ponce is currently making a name for himself. Don’t label him as the Grammy-nominated Stefan Ponce, or the Childish Gambino-affiliated Stefan Ponce, or the guy who produced ‘Down On My Luck’ and ‘3005’, Ponce is an artist of his own, with an album of his own that’s on its way. We sat down with Stefan Ponce to talk about his forthcoming project, and some of his artist friends who have helped him get to this point.

We are just a few weeks away from the release of Atlanta rapper/singer Raury’s debut album, All We Need, the follow up to his critically acclaimed mixtape Indigo Child. The LP will drop on October 16th and in promotion of the forthcoming project, Raury paid a visit to Stephen Colbert, as one of his first guests on The Late Show. The ‘Devil’s Whisper’ performance (which is the lead single from All We Need) also marked the 19-year-old’s first network television appearance.

Last night, Energy 106.9 brought two of the hottest artists right now to the Lucid Light Lounge in Milwaukee for the “That ENERGY Party”. After hours of free champagne, fans were treated to a special live performance from Atlanta rapper Silento, as he performed his hit single ‘Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae).’ After hitting that whip, everyone got to see Wisconsin native and ‘Classic Man’ singer, Jidenna, perform his hit record for the Milwaukee crowd.

Lil Dicky isn’t only a talent rapper and a hilarious comedian, but he is fiscally responsible as well. And that’s why for his new music video for ‘$ave Dat Money’, LD does just that, he saves that money and found a mansion owner who would let him shoot the visuals on-site for free. Recruiting ‘Trap Queen’ rapper Fetty Wap and Rich Homie Quan, Lil Dicky’s ‘$ave Dat Money’ video continues his trend of absolutely awesome and hilarious music videos. The video even features (free) appearances from comedians Hannibal Burress and Sarah Silverman, Kevin Durant, Dillon Francis, Tom Petty and billionaire Mark Cuban.

Last night, Ed Sheeran brought his one-man show to Chicago as he, and special guests Passenger and Christina Perri, performed at Tinley Park’s Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre. Greeting fans as the amphitheatre filled up, ‘A Thousand Years’ singer/songwriter and Pennsylvania native, Christina Perri, gave a warming opening performance. Perri split time around the stage and at her piano as she beautifully sang some of her biggest records, including ‘Jar of Hearts’ and ‘Arms’, in her opening set.
Next up was English folk rock singer, Michael Rosenberg, better known by his stage name of Passenger. Humbling himself, Passenger joked about how people often confuse him as being an entire band and reminded fans that his big song is ‘Let Her Go’, not Frozen‘s ‘Let It Go’. And while Passenger continued to make the fans laugh as he sipped his beer “strong apple juice”, his soothing folk music was the highlight of his appearance. Just coming off a performance in Minnesota, for a few hundred people, Passenger took in the moment and thanked the crowd and Mr. Sheeran for allowing him to play some of his records. Great music and making the crowd laugh between songs, Passenger knows exactly what it means to put on a great folk performance.
While the opening performances could not have been better, once 8:30 hit, it was time for the man of the night, Mr. Ed Sheeran. Opening with his records ‘I’m a Mess’ and ‘Lego House’, only two songs into the performance Sheeran had to give his disclaimer to the crowd. After a recent performance, Ed’s manager informed him of the tour’s first complaint, where a couple wanted their money back because they could not see the live band that was performing in the background. The twist however, was that there is no live band, as Ed performs all the background music live and on his own (through the help of his looping station). It’s this unique style of performance that not only showcases Sheeran’s talents, but also makes his show especially entertaining. He may not move around the stage too often, expect for when he is rapping of course, but Sheeran’s set showcases one of music’s great solo performers (which follows to other great solo performances).

Besides his new feature on Travis Scott’s debut album Rodeo and production on The Weeknd’s new LP, it feels like it has been forever since we had some new music from Kanye West. Well although we are still patiently awaiting his forthcoming album Swish, today we have a new record with Kanye West, ‘White Iverson’ rapper/singer Post Malone, and Ty Dolla $ign.
Debuting during Yeezy Season 2 (of Kanye West’s New York Fashion Week runaway show and which will reportedly not involve adidas), ‘Fade’ samples The Unidisputed Truth’s ‘I’m Losing You’ as well as Hardrive’s ‘Deep Inside’. What do you like better, this one or ‘Wolves’ (from Season 1 of Kanye’s adidas line)?
My favorite part about what I do is being able to discover new talented artists. Every so often I come across an artist that is making music beyond what their experience level typically allows. Enter Bloque, an up-and-coming hip-hop artist from The United Kingdom who may have just released a project that could be destined to end up on, “Most Underrated Albums of 2015” lists across the world. We have been keeping tabs on Bloque’s progress since the release of his track ‘Purple’ earlier this year. Knowing that his new project, HAYAMI was slated for release in September and after hearing a few of the singles…let’s just say that expectations were high.
Upon pushing play, you are met with an almost eery and calm piano number that is shortly combined with the low resounding rumble of a synth on ‘Glory’. From there, elements are added to the production as if guised as Russian nesting dolls. Bloque comes through with a clear command of his verses and talks about the selling power of ignorance, acknowledging that many artists craft their lyrics around things that they are unfamiliar with, referencing drive-bys. Halfway through the song he states and immediately reiterates, “It’s only human to fear me”, a bold statement for a new artist, but this emission of confidence is followed by the fading sound of a high-pitch piano note into nothingness and it returns as an explosion of bass and sound that is one of the best sounding productions of recent memory. Equal strides, Kanye and Travis Scott, only two-minutes in and it is obvious this album’s production alone will justify a listen-through.
On the tail end of the opening track, we catch a glimpse of Bloque’s singing style which is comparable to a certain Toronto artist by the name of Drake. On the following track, ‘Two Times’ we get a Bloque in full crooning mode. The formula is very representative of the style that many multi-faceted artists have been taking as of late; sentimental hook followed by bluntly delivered verses that are strung together by airy bridges to contrast. The contrast is isolated to occurring mostly only within each separate song. The production is varied and layered enough to be consistently engaging yet it all definitely occupies the same realm of thought and sound. Songs meld together thanks to these similarities and it creates an atmosphere that surrounds the entire work.
Topics are personal to Bloque’s past and his descriptions don’t often focus on details, but rather his emotions in those situations. He recollects his intimate encounters with women whom freely indulge in hard drugs. It is a very interesting perspective as he sings on ‘Purple’, “Cocaine and codeine I hope it don’t hurt you.” His observance becomes a point of introspection when he realizes these women do drugs to hide from the very demons he is hiding from them or perhaps himself. Bloque also puts you blindfolded in the passenger seat of his whip as he cruises around his neighborhood and paints an abstract lyrical picture of what it looks like. Over time, his abstractness can become a bit vague and the words lose some of their weight. The momentum is maintained through the stellar production and Bloque’s command over the rhythm.
His style seems to extend from a varied collection of influences. It bears close resemblance to the sound Future has been likened to over the last year or so. Progressiveness. That is the best word I can use to describe what Bloque embodies. He clearly has a lot to say about love and life and is capable of doing it in a way that hasn’t been iterated dozens of times before. His words and emotions are packaged in a way that make interpretation necessary. The album’s productions can both glide by soothingly and expertly induce an elevated heart rate within the same song. This project is representative of a lifestyle and geographical location that many of us will never experience, told in a way most of us have never heard. For now, Bloque represents the music scene a world apart in the UK; after a project of this caliber, it is certainly time for us to start representing him over here.
Last night, singer Nick Jonas performed for a packed crowd at the legendary House of Blues in Chicago, IL. With his special guest, singer/songwriter Bebe Rexha, the two certainly delivered a performance that their Chicago fans will remember for quite some time.
The night started as Rexha hit the stage, and despite being second billing on the tour, Bebe embraced her role of warming the crowd up for Nick Jonas. However, despite her emerging status, you could still hear a large number of her fans singing along in the crowd. Kicking off her career as a songwriter, and getting her first big check when she wrote Eminem and Rihanna’s hit single ‘The Monster’, Bebe performed a great mix of some of her single records with a number of other artists’ songs that Rexha has contributed to in the past few years. The highlight of her set came as she closed with an energetic performance of her big single, ‘I Can’t Stop Drinking About You’.
Soon after Rexha said goodbye to the Chicago crowd, Nick Jonas was ready to greet his Windy City fans. The lights were dim as Nick’s two lead female guitarists gave a killer introduction as Nick emerged. Opening with his record ‘Chains’, the second half of the night couldn’t have started off better. While Nick’s solo career is still relatively new, and with many still associate him with his brothers, it wasn’t long into his set that you realize his solo career has already well surpassed his work with the Jonas Brothers. Nick performed radio hit-after-hit, with a lot of his B-side tracks throughout and a beautiful acoustic performance of ‘A Little Bit Longer’, until he capped the night with an encore performance of ‘Jealous’.
Check out our photos and the official set list below and be sure to check out if Nick and Bebe are coming to a city near you.
