Poet/Activist Behind Chance The Rapper’s “Open Mike” Events Charged with Felony Over Laquan McDonald Protests

BY TER STAFF

Malcolm London

[UPDATE: Charges against Malcolm London have now been dropped.]

Last night hundreds of protesters walked the streets of downtown Chicago to protest the murder of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. While the protests were overwhelmingly peaceful, a small scuffle did break out between Chicago police officers and protesters. Involved in the mass scuffle was Chicago’s own, rapper Vic Mensa. Mensa stood behind his brothers and sisters to march in support of McDonald and to show their disgust over the newly released video, where an officer (who has since been charge with murder) is seen shooting McDonald 16 times.

Mensa wasn’t the only Chicago activist in attendance last night. Poet and activist Malcolm London, who is one of the co-founders and hosts of Chance The Rapper’s “Open Mike” nights, was arrested and charged with felony aggravated assault. While police allege that London struck an officer, other witnesses disagree. Alderman Roderick Sawyer, who is the Chair of the City Council Black Caucus in Chicago, commended London as a hero. According to Sawyer’s daughter, who was with London last night, police officers wrongfully blamed London for a flare light that was thrown and promptly apprehended him after.

The city of Chicago is rightfully outraged tonight as graphic footage was released of the death of Laquan McDonald, who was brutally killed by a Chicago police officer. While this alone is reason for many to be applauded, the officer who shot McDonald, who has since been charged with murder, shot the 17-year old a total of 16 times in the incident.

In a video captured by CBS, a scuffle breaks out between protesters and Chicago police officers. While he certainly isn’t shown doing anything wrong, one notable person involved in the middle of the fight is Chicago’s own, rapper Vic Mensa, who can be seen towards the end of the video. Tensions are very high in Chicago right now, and knowing how active Vic is in his city and the Black Lives Matter movement, his involvement is not unexpected.

Throughout the night only one arrest was made during the protests. Community activist, Malcolm London, was arrested after police say he punched an officer. The activist, who runs Chance The Rapper’s “Open Mike” events in Chicago was charged with a felony, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Milwaukee is currently experiencing a new wave of talented musicians and artists throughout the city, one that Chicago’s little brother to the North has not seen in quite some time. Of the most talented artists emerging out of Milwaukee right now is New Age Narcissism, a collective comprised of rapper WebsterX, singers Lex Allen and Siren and more. Recently Milwaukee’s 88Nine Radio invited NAN’s Lex Allen and Siren to a local recording studio to lay down their own reinterpretations of two big records from The Weeknd. Covering Abel’s ‘Earned It’, from The Weeknd’s latest LP and the “Fifty Shades of Grey” soundtrack, Lex Allen performed a James Bond inspired rendition of the Beauty Behind The Madness track. And deciding to take a darker spin on the otherwise upbeat and poppy ‘Can’t Feel My Face’, Siren covered the song of the summer and Weeknd’s biggest single to date.

Watch Lex Allen’s rendition of ‘Earned It’ by The Weeknd below, as well as Siren’s ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ cover.

This is the first new track from Gambino and Aiko both, in quite some time, so stream it now and cross your fingers as the record has been submitted for the “Best Original Song” category of the Oscars. In the past month, Milwaukee’s WebsterX has been dropping local hints around the city, before the reveal of his big announcement with fellow New Age Narcissism member, Q the Sun. After his #whoiskidx art campaign, WebsterX announced that he and Q the Sun were releasing a new 3-track EP, titled KidX, inspired by Radiohead’s 2000 album KidA. While some fans got to hear the project early this past weekend at the “KidX Listening Disco”, today marks the official release of the project, as well as it’s debut on Noisey. This is the first project that WebsterX has attached his name to since his notoriety has consistently risen through his ‘doomsday’ and ‘Latley’ visuals, as well as his big collaboration with the Kanye West-affiliated, Allan Kingdom.
