On Thursdays we review albums that are considered “classic”. This week we will review the classic LP that has been recently named the most ground-breaking album of all time by Rolling Stone, Kanye West’s game-changing 808s & Heartbreak. While Mr. West had always stepped away from conventional rap structure since the inception of his career with The College Dropout, Ye really reinvented the wheel with this one. Creating a concept album that contained 11-tracks (and one live bonus track) of music made entirely from an 808s synthesizer, themed around love and which all contained heavy use of auto-tune, Kanye made a musical masterpiece which was widely misunderstood and polarizing during its initial 2008 release but which is now the most influential album of all time. This album paved the way for today’s popular artists (mainly Drake), further introduced the world to brilliance of Kid Cudi (who had a vast influence on the album’s sound), and showed us that even when Kanye “can’t sing” he can make a singing album better than anyone else.
Fans who tuned-in to The Colbert Report last night were given a treat as rapper Kendrick Lamar performed a never-before-heard and untitled track. While this one may not be as radio friendly as his recent single ‘i’, this powerful performance should get any rap fan excited for Kendrick’s upcoming sophomore album. Still no word as to when we can expect the project, but certainly be on the look out real soon. Check out the full performance below.
Earlier this summer, Lil B released one of his deepest tracks to date, “No Black Person Is Ugly”. Four months later, The Based God has released a song inspired by the racial tension throughout the country and in honor of Eric Garner, who died after an altercation with a NYPD officer. Despite Garner pleading with the officer that he could not breathe, the grand jury decided not to indict the officer. Throughout the country, people (Lil B included) have been showing their support. Check out the 7-minute track, “I Can’t Breath” below.

Listen to Chief Keef’s new song ‘Nobody’ featuring Kanye West. The ’12 Million’ produced track features auto-tuned background vocals from Kanye and may have a familiar sounding beat for many hip-hop fans. The track, which samples Willie Hutch’s ‘Brother’s Gonna Work It Out’, sounds very similar to another recent Chicago rap track which samples the Hutch song in almost the same way, Chance The Rapper’s ‘Lost’. Compare the two tracks below.
