Red Bull Music Festival Invades Chicago with Stacked Opening Night

BY TER STAFF

Kicking off what will certainly be a great month of live music in Chicago, the month-long Red Bull Music Festival invaded Chicago last night with a stacked opening night lineup. Taking place at the Wintrust Arena, Red Bull hosted a GOOD Music Showcase that featured a number of the label’s members and closest affiliates, including Desiigner, Teyana Taylor, Nas, Pusha T and more. From top to bottom, fans in the Windy City enjoyed performances from some of their favorite rappers and singers.

The night kicked off in great fashion as GOOD Music’s 070 Shake, got the performances started by singing her new collaboration’s with the label’s founder and Chicago’s own, Kanye West, who unfortunately did not make an appearance despite fan speculation. The set was short but sweet and set the tone for the remainder of the night.

After one of the labels newest signees, Valee, performed, ‘Panda’ rapper Desiigner delivered the wildest and craziest set of the entire night. Desiigner had an infinite amount of energy and had the floor level moshing and going crazy. Desiigner even immersed himself into the mosh pit and put it all on the line to keep the crowd engaged. While he doesn’t have the star power of the night’s headliners, Desiigner proved why he is certainly worthy of his spot on GOOD Music.

Although she didn’t dive into the crowd like Desiigner, Teyana Taylor’s performance was also well received by the Chicago crowd, getting some of the loudest screams of the entire night. Teyana’s set was a nice contrast with all the rapper’s on the lineup, as she showed off her impressive dance skills and amazing vocals. Her set was soon followed by the label’s president, rap legend, Pusha T. Pusha T always gives his all on stage and fans in attendance can attest that Saturday night was certainly no exception to the rule. Pusha performed a number of tracks from his new Kanye West produced album, Daytona, one of the contenders for Rap’s Album of the Year.

Last but certainly not least, Nas blessed the stage to greet his Chicago fans. One of the greatest of all time, Nas is as good as ever and like Pusha T, he performed tracks from his new album produced by Kanye, of course mixed with some of his biggest hits from throughout the years. Nas blew us away with his new tracks while keeping us nostalgic with the classic and was a great ending to an already memorable night. Well done Red Bull… well done!

Following his show-stopping performance at Milwaukee’s Summerfest last June, the entertaining, uber-talented and cake throwing Steve Aoki returned to Wisconsin and brought his Kolony Tour to The Rave in Milwaukee, WI.

Joined by a huge cast of EMD acts, including Grandtheft, Deorro and Bad Royale, and GOOD Music‘s Desiigner, Steve Aoki brought the party to Milwaukee on a cold Wednesday night.

Soon after doors opened, the music started as the EDM openers, complete with Aoki’s friends and collaborators, got the crowd moving from the very beginning. Energy levels really turned up though, as the ‘Panda’ MC, Desiigner, hit the stage. Performing a number of records from his debut project, New English, the Kanye West-signed rapper brought his wild stage presence to the opening set.

After a brief set change, it was time for Steve Aoki to greet his Wisconsin fans. From start to finish Aoki performed some of his best tracks and remixes, and most importantly he took control of the night, ensuring that every fan left sweaty, out of energy, without their voice and some covered in cake.

Since his memorable Summerfest performance, less than a year ago, Aoki has showed his new found love for Milwaukee on social media a number of times. That love was more than apparent tonight, and you can surely bet that after his past two crazy performances, Milwaukee will be a staple in Steve Aoki tours in the future.

Check out our photos from tonight’s performance below and get your tickets for the remaining dates of the tour here, where $1 of every ticket sold goes to the Aoki Foundation, which supports brain science research.

Photos: WGCI’s Big Jam Brings Chris Brown, Young Thug, Lil Yatchy & More to Chicago

WGCI’s Big Jam returned this year to the United Center with featured performances of the biggest names in business. The sold out show continued.

Chicago natives came in strive with performances from G-Herbo, Lil Bibby, and Dreezy. The Chicago fans came to represent with an early crowd to support the local talent. G-Herbo and Lil Bibby joined forces sharing the stage starting off Big Jam. Dreezy wasted no time showing love to the hometown crowd. The only female artist on the lineup made sure she dominated her performance.

The strict time schedule was a definite mood killer with sets being cut short, but with so many big names on just one lineup, what else can you do? Without proper goodbyes from the artist though, it created some confusing moments in the energy filled night.

Fan favorite Lil Yatchy added his personal flare to the star-studded event. Hit records like “Night”, “Minnesota”, and “Broccoli” had the sold out crowd wanting more.

Definitely one of the most talked about performance of the evening came from Desiigner. Desiigner from start to finish left Big Jam fans in awe. His adrenaline filled set was a spectacle, you couldn’t look away.

A true crowd pleasure, a.k.a. Mr. Steal Your Girl, Trey Songz had the sold out crowd in a complete frenzy. The roaring was matched with Songz’ charismatic performance. With some speculation to whether or not Songz was going to perform due to an onstage breakdown of stage equipment last week. Songz didn’t disappoint the United Center with his stellar performance.

Co-heading Big Jam was R&B juggernaut Chris Brown. Brown a true showman used every inch of the platform to dance every single of his signature hits. Brown led the United Center in the ultimate dance party. Without skipping a beat Brown didn’t stop giving one second of a showstopper performance.

Young Thug ended the night with some of his crowd favorites. Young Thug’s performance was unfortunately cut short due to his allotted set time. Regardless of the awkward transitions and premature ending sets Big Jam was one big Chicago house party. There wasn’t a better way to close off 2016 then seeing some of the best is hip-hop and R&B.

Mixtape Review: New English | Desiigner

BY DANNY GLYNN

Very little is known about Sidney Royel Selby III, aka G.O.O.D. Music‘s newest signee, Desiigner. After being blessed by Kanye West with a feature on his recent LP, The Life of Pablo, the 19-year-old Brooklyn native was thrown into the rap scene with tremendous force. His debut single ‘Panda’, which was featured on Kanye’s ‘Father Stretch My Hands Pt 2’, went number 1 and stayed at the top for a number of weeks, making the record more successful than anyone could have ever imagined. Perhaps the only thing bad that came out of ‘Panda’ is Desiigner’s striking similarities in sound to Atlanta rapper, Future. And ever since, you can’t hear Desiigner’s names without accusations of him biting from Future. After catapulting to the top with just one single, many were waiting to see if he would be able to compose a complete project that would match his new found popularity. New English is Desiigner’s attempt at such an LP.

Desiigner starts off New English with a classical string intro, which is not something that you would expect from a new drill artist. The project’s Intro quickly transitions into a hard hitting song titled ‘Caliber’. This is the type of track that you hope Desiigner would make. It’s fast, lots of base, and inaudible, which is a common theme throughout the LP. Just by listening to this first track, one can tell that this album is going to be one that you play when you want to jump around and throw your body in every direction. Desiigner repeats the word “caliber” 41 times in this one song alone, so it’s purpose on the project is clearly not for its substance. If you are looking for music with intricate and witty lyrics like J. Cole or Kendrick Lamar, you are in the wrong place. If you are looking for music to make sure that you keep the aux cord for the rest of the car ride while you are with your friends, then you might want to stick around.

The next song, titled ‘Make It Out’, is especially confusing from the start. The transition between ‘Caliber’ and this record is very abrupt and sudden. The former track stops in the middle of a verse and then you are thrown into the latter. In fact, the majority of his songs were between 24 seconds and 2 minutes. The record is a confusing one, as it sounds like there are 3 different artists on this one track alone, however it’s all Desiigner. One verse sounds like G Herbo and then on another it sounds like DMX. Desiigner is a shapeshifter.

The song ‘Shooters’ consists of Desiigner saying “finna pull up with the shooters” about 24 times and the most aggressive tongue rolls you have ever heard in your life. One of the definite ways to tell if you are listening to a Desiigner song is to listen for his already classic ad-lib grunts or tongue rolls. They have become his signature sound. The next song ‘Monstas & Villains’ is only 37 seconds long and consists of one hook. Perhaps he wants to make his songs short enough so that people actually listen to the entire track. He then fills up time with an interlude in New English, three total throughout the project. When your mixtape has three instrumentals and it’s still incredibly short, you know you’re in trouble. ‘Talk Regardless’ is yet again another repetitive track. As many could expect, this mixtape lacks content and is not up to par lyrically. But with drill and trap music, perhaps that’s what you sign up for.

‘Da Day’ is the longest song on the album and features Milly.CTD. He has some good lyrics and it is refreshing to understand what he is saying. When Desiigner comes on you are sucked back into jumping around. This is not an album that you can listen to by yourself. You are only putting yourself in danger of breaking everything around you. Following up is the ‘Jet’, which features G.O.O.D. Music president, rapper Pusha T. The track speaks on all of the things worthy of spending money on; like cars, chains, women and more.

The final song on the mixtape is of course the song that made this Brooklyn kid the star he is today. The song that gets him invited to Kanye West premieres, add his name to the XXL Freshman Class, and the one that will be the driving force behind his millions of dollars in the near future. ‘Panda’ is one that we can all recognize and recite, well at least the bridge which consists of “Hey Panda, Panda,Panda, Panda, Panda, Panda, Panda, Panda, Panda, Panda.” I guess that’s all it takes to make it in the rap world in 2016. The public was livid when the XXL Freshman Class was released. With all these young artists that rap repetitive lyrics that no one can relate too it’s only a matter of time before it’s too late for hip hop. The silver lining is that there is definitely an audience for New English, and while Desiigner may not be the most conscious rapper today, he doesn’t have to be. He is still a kid in many ways who has a number of projects ahead of him to find his own sound and voice.6.0
