In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Nicki Minaj addressed the chocking and death of Eric Garner by a NYPD officer and her opinion on why black artists sometimes choose not to speak out against racial injustices. Specifically Minaj cited the backlash Kanye West received after his famous “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” quote, when addressing a televised audience during the destruction of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Earlier today, Hot 97‘s “Ebro in the Morning” hosted rapper Macklemore for a great discussion on race and white privilege (specifically in the music world). Among many topics, Macklemore addresses police brutality and whether he believes that his music is embraced by white radio and the Grammys because of his skin color. Last night singer Jhene Aiko performed at Chicago’s legendary House of Blues, accompanied by Odd Future‘s The Internet and TDE‘s SZA as part of her Enter The Void Tour. Jhene performed a beautiful set for the sold-out crowd, closed by her Sail Out single ‘The Worst’. The ‘Tip Toe Wing In My Jawwdinz’ rapper took to his Twitter today to announce that his sophomore and junior albums, following the 2014 release of his debut Neon Icon, will drop on June 1st of 2015. According to Riff Raff, the Peach Panther album will be a “neon rap album” with Riff on the hooks and zero features (except for his dog Jody Husky). The Purple Panther album will be a “neon rock album” with live instruments and two members of Riff’s band. Check out the details and his all-caps announcement below.
