Yung Lean first caught my attention upon randomly watching his video for‘Hurt‘ on YouTube. At least for me, it was a match made in heaven. What I saw was a 16 something year old kid who was rapping about Nintendo 64, Louie Vitton duffle bags full of heroin, Arizona Iced Tea, and feeling sad emotions over a cloud rap/ vaporwave beat. The visuals were nice too. One reason why I liked Yung Lean in the first place is because his music married trap with vaporware, a weird world filled with slowed down Muzak samples, 90s corporate nostalgia obsession, and absurd artwork.
At the beginning of this year, Kid Ink dropped his major label debut My Own Lane. It was an album where at best showed that Kid Ink knew his way around a melodic pop hook when he felt like it, but at worst he failed to present himself as a fully capable MC. Now Kid Ink has brought along his gang of fellow rappers known as Batgang for 4B’s. After giving him a second chance after said mediocre debut however, he fails to bring much to consider to the point of weighing down the whole mixtape. 4B’s is a good example of that when you lower the bar so far down to the ground, everyone else surrounding you doesn’t feel the need to try much.
It’s that time of year again. FYF Fest is happening this weekend in the city of sunny Los Angeles, California. Having the fortune of being able to go for both days, I am very excited to see a slew of artists crossing several genres, some new, some old, and some reunited again after a hiatus (with the unfortunate exception of Death Grips due to breaking up last July). Here are my 10 most anticipated acts:
