Minutes ago, St. Paul native and singer/songwriter Corbin stepped off stage after a great Wednesday night performance at Madison, WI’s Majestic Theatre. Formerly known as Spooky Black and 1/4th of Thestand4rd, Corbin was joined by his tour’s co-headliner, Shlohmo, and D33J, to put on a show for the University of Wisconsin crowd.
Up first for the night was electronic producer, Djavan Santos, who is better known as D33J (pronounced ‘deej’). The Los Angeles artist has collaborated with artists like Lil Yachty and Tory Lanez, and tonight he played a number of tracks to get the night started right.
Paving the way for Shlohmo’s co-headlining set, the producer kept the party going with a number of cuts for his Wisconsin fans. Shlohmo has been putting out project after project for the past seven years, including his No More EP with Jeremih and a number of fan favorite remixes, but tonight was all about his original music. Shlohmo played track after track, thanking the audience after each track. Shlohmo hadn’t done a show in Wisconsin in years, but fans already can’t wait for his return.
After a brief intermission, Corbin hit the stage to greet his Madison fans around 11:00 PM. With finals still months away, Madison had no reason not to stay up all night as the talented singer performed some of his early singles and tracks from his debut album, MOURN. What’s maybe most appealing about the Minnesota singer is the contrast between his appearance and vocals, proving that no one should just a book by his cover. While his attire was relatively conservative tonight, in the music video for one of his breakout tracks ‘Without U’, Corbin (at that time, Spooky Black), a caucasian teenager, is dressed in turtle necks, FUBU tees and do-rags, which looks humorous to some, until his amazing voice takes over.
With retro movies and home videos playing on a projector behind him, and a unique set design which consisted of a rug, old television set and two cardboard dogs constructed out of painted over USPS Priority Mail shipping boxes, the performance had an intimate vibe from the very beginning.
Corbin continued to showcase his vocal talents and he did not disappoint. Highlights of Corbin’s headlining set included his performances of ‘reason’, ‘Without U’ and of course the lead single from his debut LP, ‘Ice Boy’, which is produced by his tourmate, Shlohmo. Freshman, grad student or Madison local, there was no better way to spend your Wednesday than at the Majestic tonight.
