Due to their 2012 arrest and almost two year prison sentence, the Russian feminist punk rock group, Pussy Riot, is suing its homeland of Russia.

According to their complaint Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova (of Pussy Riot) are seeking a total of over $300,000 in damages and another $13,437 in attorney’s fees. The human rights representing the two originally initiated a complaint after the two were arrested after performing their song “Mother of God, Drive Putin Out” at the Christ the Savior Cathedral. According to the legal complaints, Russia violated various articles of the European convention on human rights, specifically the rights to “freedom of expression, liberty and security and a fair trial, and prohibiting torture.”

If the Pussy Riot members win their suit, they have stated that they will donate the money to several human rights charities. The Russian government has since issued a legal response.
