Sometimes you have things come before you in life that not even your imagination can piece together its perceived quality. Could be good, could be Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. “Don’t knock it ‘till you try it”, is a common expression for supporters of the new, interesting and potentially life-changing. Now, when I came across Phantogram (now one of my favorite electronic groups) on Big Boi’s undeniably experimental 2012 album, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, I was gleefully anxious. Meshing genres is nothing new in the realm of sound; but to take two extremely distinct, creative sounds and to unify them, is no small feat. A feat, nonetheless, that they recently attempted to duplicate.
It had been years since we had heard anything from the nameless, genre-less troupe. Then, as if by fortuitous happening, a song by the name of ‘Fell In The Sun’ hit the net via a group named, Big Grams. Realizing shortly after that this name is a lazily simple melding of the two separate stage names, all I could do was hope the music wouldn’t be so uninspired – and for the most part, it succeeds.
The EP takes off with ‘Run for Your Life’, a song that starts things off on a pretty low-key note. A distant snap of drumsticks colliding provides a simple enough rhythm for Big Boi to lay some of his playful Daddy Fat Sacks bars over. When the chorus reveals itself to us through the airy vocals of Phantogram’s Sarah Barthel it sounds like what you’d expect. While both parts sound singularly good, the track lacks some creative cohesion. From here on out though, that problem quickly fades away as the creativity flows into an ever-increasing current.
The second track, “Lights On’, capably eliminates any negatively juxtaposing elements. Especially evident is the highly melodic rapping from Big Boi. By the time we hit the third track, Big Grams has fully surfaced. ‘Fell In The Sun’ simultaneously overlays Sarah’s light vocals with Big Boi’s lyrics. The production is consistent and has enough Atlanta-esque hip-hop elements reformed within Phantogram’s signature psyche-pop style to allow for a seamless integration. Following right behind is a sample-laden production from 9th Wonder on ‘Put It On Her’. Big Boi smoothly puts down some suave bars about his classy demeanor that leaves women clamoring at his feet. The seductive chorus separates Big Boi’s slick utterings from Josh Carter’s, highly electronic attempt at rapping. While Josh’s style would have little chance of carrying the weight of an album by itself, here, I personally like the variation of the verse – and rhythmically, it is on point.
From bouncy, down-to-earth cadences to intergalactic synthesizers, the production spans both genres without ever being spread too thinly. The final two tracks have Big Grams opening the doors to other masters of their respective genres. Run The Jewels two-piece, Killer Mike and El-P make an in-your-face appearance on ‘Born To Shine’, while Skrillex lends a hand on club-suited banger, ‘Drum Machine’. It’s an intense and fitting end to an EP that took two separate musical entities and amalgamated them, forming something entirely new. While this EP came from nowhere and serves us only a 26-minute platter of creativity, all of its moving parts form a concise, unified whole that is almost always unique and works on more levels than it falters. Which leaves me with one question. Was this was a one-time outing or will it be known as the first breaths of a potential super group?
Chicago is like no other city when it comes to music festivals. Sure Indio, CA has Coachella, but the Windy City has so much more. For it’s big ticket festival, of course you have Lollapalooza, and indie lovers and hipsters have Pitchfork, and North Coast for the bassheads and Riot Fest for the rockers, but then you have especially unique festivals like Freaky Deaky (which takes place on Halloween) and Mamby on the Beach, which takes place on an effin beach! If a festival on the water sounds awesome, it’s because it is. Growing up isn’t always easy and it is now apparent to me how vastly different everyone’s lives can be. Sounding like an electrified, version of 90’s alternative music, Meg Myers’ debut album is an emotionally saturated powerhouse of sound. Sorry is a concise, pouring out of emotions. It discusses what many people consider simple emotions with such daring complexity that it eventually has you looking at every aspect of your psyche from a new angle. Both completely honest and relentlessly brutal, her goal is not to lament the past but to learn from it and grow. Album opener, ‘Motel’ starts off with reinforcing statements regarding Myers’ sadness. She clearly struggles with the more unsavory aspects of her life which is now headed towards stardom. It’s hard not to empathize with her struggle as she belts out, “I wanna love, wanna live, wanna breathe, wanna give, wanna. But it’s hard and it’s dark and were doomed from the start.” A pessimistic naturalist’s sort of interpretation of the world when trying to be optimistic. It is a lot of moving thoughts that all end up coming across as honest.
Myers’ honesty is perhaps her strongest ally (other than her incredible voice), as she is capable of turning her own sadness and sorrow into music that sounds more like a breathe of empowerment than a bath in sorrow. The title track, “Sorry”, is the perfect example of this occurrence as it it maneuvers its way around the subject of an afflicting break-up via its electronic elements and 1000-volt chorus. She has transformed her fears into energy on ‘A Bolt From The Blue’, creating a sound well equipped for mainstream pop-radio – albeit one with dark undertones.
Bass guitar skills rear their head on the threatening sound of ‘Desire’, which is a rock-influenced uncomfortable yet sexy journey into Myers’ sexuality. From this point, the instrumentation on the project succumbs to a quicksand-like hold. Drums and guitars comprise the more generic makeup of the latter half of the emotional outing. While it all sounds good and perhaps better fits the subject matter covered, it represses the lively energy contained in the first half beneath slowly articulated guitars and violins. There are moments, ‘Lemon Eyes’ and ‘Make A Shadow’, that provide the same adrenaline potent build-up and choruses that Myers is fitted to command.
The album’s content isn’t by any means edgy in its meaning. Infact, its meaning is so easily relatable that it can become uncomfortably edgy in its honesty. Relationship and break-ups have been commonplace among song topics for as long as any person can remember. The beauty isn’t in the details – rather, it lies within the vagueness of her pen downed emotions. Instead of detailing what happened in her relationships, she places almost all of the emphasis on her brokenness and turns it into her freedom by the time the last eerie, scratching second of ‘Feather’ rolls out from your speaker.
Today we traveled to Camp Randall Stadium to see the No. 22 ranked Wisconsin Badgers host the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. While Hawaii’s defense gave Wisconsin more of a challenge than its last couple opponents, Wisconsin defense again stole the show, shutting out Hawaii for a 28-0 victory.

There’s something about playing under the bright lights for a night game that can bring out the best in teams and players. The stage-like atmosphere is an adrenaline rush. The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (2-2) and the Wisconsin Badgers (3-1) squared off at Camp Randall Stadium on a mild 70 degree Saturday night. Feeding off a frenzied college crowd, the Badgers made it three wins in a row as they defeated the Rainbow Warriors 28-0.
Hawaii received the opening kickoff. After a huge sack on a safety blitz by Wisconsin resulting in a 10-yard loss on second down, Hawaii was looking at a long third down. On third down and 15, senior quarterback Max Wittek was able to convert out of the pistol formation on a 27-yard strike to Quinton Pedroza near midfield.
On the next set of downs, the Rainbow Warriors promptly went three and out, having to punt to Wisconsin. Unlike their first two home games in which they struggled mightily on their opening possession, Wisconsin put together a very Badger-like drive. They pounded the ball with authority with Dare Ogunbowale and Taiwan Deal, the Badgers new top rushing tandem. Wisconsin capped their first possession with a 2-yard rush into the heart of Hawaii’s defense for the game’s first touchdown.
Hawaii features a 3-4 defense which is a rarity these days in college football. And maybe that was the key, as the Rainbow Warriors defense gave the Badgers fits the entire first half, surrendering just 14 points.
It would have been only seven, save for a late touchdown by Wisconsin with just 38 seconds remaining.
The Badgers defense forced a Rainbow Warriors punt with just 2:11 remaining in the first half. Badgers senior quarterback Joel Stave was just 4-10 passing to that point. Stave would go 4-4 on the final drive of the half, leading the Badgers down the field for a nine play 73 yard scoring drive that made it 14-0 after two quarters of play.
With Taiwan Deal looking unstoppable all half, it was Stave who lead the crucial drive in the final minutes of the first half.
Facing third down and 2 from their own 47-yard line, it was Deal who sprinted for a 17-yard gainer to keep the drive alive. After a holding penalty on first down, making it first and 20, Stave completed consecutive passes of 12 and 9 yards for another first down. A perfectly thrown ball from Stave to Erickson, which resulted in a defensive passing interference call in the end zone, set up Deal’s second two yard touchdown run.
With both teams struggling to score despite getting into each other’s territory in the second half, it was the Badgers who broke through late in the third when Stave connected with senior tight end Austin Traylor. Traylor has succeeded Robert Wheelwright as Stave’s favorite target in the red zone.
The pass and catch play came on third down and 11. It was a big play for Wisconsin to gain a little breathing room over Hawaii as they hadn’t been able to pull away to that point. That play sealed it for Wisconsin.
The Badgers defense has been absolutely dominant over the past three games. They haven’t surrendered a single touchdown in their last 12 quarters of play, giving up a total of three points in their last three games played.
They held the Rainbow Warriors to just 15 yards rushing on Saturday night; this after holding Miami (OH) and Troy to a combined 78 yards on the ground.
Paul Harris had just 22 yards on 6 carries. Quarterback Max Wittek was effective, finishing 189 yards passing. Hawaii just couldn’t finish the job when they got into the red zone.
Freshman back Taiwan Deal was the man on this night for the Badgers. Deal rushed for 147 yards on 26 carries, getting into the end zone twice.
Dare Ogunbowale played second fiddle this week and chipped in with 85 yards on 15 carries. Ogunbowale put the cherry on top for the Badgers with a 9-yard pitch carry for the last points of the game.
Stave had a quiet game after two brilliant efforts against Miami (OH) and Troy. The senior finished 14/23 for 164 yards and a touchdown. Stave and the Badgers did not turn the ball over.
Senior Alex Erickson had a big day for Wisconsin, catching 9 passes for 87 yards. Many of the catches kept drives alive for Stave and company.
The Badgers have hummed right along without their star running back Corey Clement. Things may be different once conference play begins for the Badgers next week. Will the Badgers continue to pass as much as they have been? Can Ogunbowale and Deal remain this effective when the quality of opponents ramp up? Head coach Paul Chryst and the Badgers certainly hope so.
The Wisconsin Badgers will now turn its attention to next week, where they will finally begin conference play when they host the Iowa Hawkeyes (4-0) at Camp Randall Stadium at 11:00 am Eastern. The game will be broadcast on both ABC and ESPN networks.
Last night, Hopsin brought his Funk Volume 2015 Tour to Milwaukee’s Turner Hall Ballroom with Dizzy Wright, DJ Hoppa and Jarren Benton. With some energetic sets from Benton and Wright, and even a short film played between performances, the man of the night and the whole Funk Volume crew definitely delivered. Hopsin performed a number of tracks from latest LP, Pound Syndrome, as well as a collection of his older tracks (including a few from his “Ill Mind of Hopsin” series. Hopsin gave his dedicated Milwaukee fans everything they asked for and more last night.
